Captain Richard Kent

Captain Richard Kent – Dartmouth
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Captain Richard Kent, devoted husband and father, on Thursday, December 23, 2021. Richard was born on May 14, 1941 and was the son of the late Samuel and Cora Kent (Williams) of Ostrea Lake.
He leaves behind wife Patricia Kent (Boutilier), love of his life for 54 years, son Ian Kent, daughter Lara Gill (Trevor), and his treasured granddaughter Emma Gill. Richard was predeceased by his younger brother Ralph Kent. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will follow in the spring at Ostrea Lake.
Richard was a sailor. He started his seafaring career with the Canadian Coast Guard, travelling to Tanquary Fjord on the John A. MacDonald, the closest to the North Pole a Canadian vessel had ever been. Following that he was employed by Imperial Oil travelling to destinations in Europe, the Mediterranean, South America as well as many North American Ports until early in his marriage. He then spent several years working ashore but was inevitably called back to the sea where he spent the rest of his career, quickly advancing to a respected Master Mariner with a strong aptitude for ship handling.
Richard loved the outdoors. He was an avid sportsman of big and small game as well as an observer of nature. He was happy when gardening or being out in the woods picking berries or chopping firewood. In early years he was an avid camper, exploring the Maritimes and Eastern States, eventually spending summers in PEI. In later years, Richard and his wife Patricia enjoyed many winters in Florida exploring different states and visiting with friends old and new along the way. He was outgoing and enjoyed meeting new people, making many friends wherever he travelled. Richard was full of kindness and energy, always working tirelessly around the home as well as seeking out friends and neighbors who needed a hand or a “little job” done. He enjoyed simple pleasures, cooking and having family and friends around the table for a meal and a yarn.
Richard was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. As he prepared to make his final sail we know his loved ones who had passed before were there to meet him at the shore.
In lieu of flowers, consider doing a good deed or a “little job” for someone in your community.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Captain Richard Kent May 14 1941 December 23 2021..
