Obituary
Brayden Christopher McFarlane, precious son of Chris and Crystal McFarlane, passed away at home in Okotoks, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 9, 2021. He was 20 years old.
Brayden was born on September 22, 2001, in Calgary and soon moved to Andrew Alberta, where he began his young childhood in the wide-open spaces of a farm. He grew to love the outdoors at a very young age with special pony Sprocket “the Rocket”, his riding companion by age 4, and a quad his introduction to “all things motors.” He took so much pride in being big brother to Ainsleigh and Caleb, playing and leading the way in country life. By age 5, the family moved to a farm in Lamont Alberta. Country living and community life soared with great friendships from hockey, school, and Lamont Alliance church. Brayden and family moved when he was 11 to Okotoks where he lived on an acreage. He loved this community with all his heart, establishing great friendships.
Brayden started his hockey career in Andrew at 5 years of age as a defenceman. His love of the game grew with him, with his favorite year in Midget when he was 17 years old. He made lifetime friendships and learned the value of teamwork.
Brayden grew to love water sports spending time every summer creating so many memories with family, friends, and young cousins. Kookanusa was his favorite place with jet skiing and surfing his passion.
Brayden graduated from Okotoks Foothills Composite High School in 2019. He eventually landed a summer job with KGL construction, where he was excited to use his young talents with machinery. Three weeks into this position, Brayden went on medical leave for his disease. Robin and Brooke from KGL were instrumental in setting up Go-Fund-Me which facilitated the opening of every door possible for Brayden’s treatment.
Brayden is survived by his parents Chris and Crystal; siblings Ainsleigh and Caleb; grandparents Stan/Linda McFarlane and Darrell/Cheryl Millman; Aunties Melissa (Mac)McRae, Michelle (Dave) Patton, Tanis Millman; Uncles Dr. Cory McFarlane, Conrad (Christine) McFarlane. There are many cousins, additional Aunts and Uncles. Brayden was predeceased by his Uncle Shane Millman and cousin Victor -Rosales-Millman.
Brayden was a spirited and energetic young man who grew in these qualities into a trusting and tenacious adult. His zest for life carried him through his cancer treatments as he rebuilt car engines, snow mobiles, and seadoo’s. He fought his cancer with ferocity and courage as he battled physical and mental health with the support of health care professionals, family and friends.
Chris and Crystal and family would like to recognize Dr. Kahn and Dr. Martos for their exceptional, honest and relational care of Brayden throughout his cancer therapy. The Oncology care team at the Tom Baker Cancer Center were wonderful and caring, especially Amanda and Carmen. Family Dr. Stafford has extended continual medical and compassionate care to Brayden and the family throughout. Dr. Fay from High River Hospital was instrumental in treatment the last weeks and setting up home care. And we extend very deep heartfelt gratitude and honor to Dr. Cory McFarlane, Chris’s brother, who palliated Brayden through his last days, allowing family to just “be”.
