Bessie Luella Hubble Sills Monday November 15th 2021

Bessie Luella Hubble
Oct 3, 1928 – Nov 15, 2021
Bessie died peacefully at Belleville General Hospital in her 94th year, with her family by her side. She was born at home on the 8th of Thurlow. Daughter of the late Roy and Nellie Sills and stepdaughter of the late Maysel Sills. Beloved wife and partner of the late Burton Hubble. Predeceased by infant son Thomas. Dear mother of Nancy (Ivan) Chatten, Frances (Rob) Arbuckle, George (Cathy) Hubble, Jane (Richard) Pym, Margaret (Jim) Wright, and Isobel Hubble (Stephen Rathwell). Dear sister of Lois Ray, Connie Stetler, Bob Sills, Roy Sills and Marg Sullivan. Predeceased by sisters Jean Baker, Dorothy Baker and Doris Cross, and by brothers Jack, Don, and Doug Sills. Loved by 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Bessie was educated at Zion Hill Public School and worked at Ontario School for the Deaf (OSD) from 1947 to 1951. After she married Burton Hubble, on Oct 13, 1951, she became a full-time farmer’s wife, driving tractors, getting in hay, and milking cows (sometimes by hand). She was also Burton’s silent partner in the insurance business (The Co-operators) for 35 years.
Bessie and Burton also made maple syrup for over 40 years, helping to start the Maple
Syrup Association in this area. For many years, there were school trips that made their way to the Hubble sugar shanty with Bessie making up hundreds of sample bottles of syrup for all to take home.
When Burton took up fiddling at the age of 55, Bessie became his Social Secretary, arranging his schedule to play at different retirement homes with the musical group he started – Fiddlers and Friends. Bessie continued the group after Burton’s death in March 2000 up until Covid came along. She enjoyed singing the closing number, Smile A While, on Thursdays at Hastings Manor.
Bessie continued to enjoy a full social life with many friends after Burton died. She had a zest for life and was always on the go and always organizing events such as her music group and Sisters’ Day luncheons. It took a pandemic to slow her down. We are grateful that we could be with her when she passed.
Mrs. Hubble is resting with the John R. Bush Funeral Home, 80 Highland Ave. Belleville (613-968-5588). A Celebration of Life will be held in the chapel on Sunday November 21st, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. , with visitation one hour prior from 2:00-3:00 p.m. All those wishing to attend the visitation or funeral service must show proof of full vaccination and photo I.D. If desired memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation are appreciated.
