Bert’s Obituary
On Thursday, September 23, 2021, Bert Lunnon peacefully passed away in the Valley Hospice, Kentville. Born November 4, 1942 in Blenheim, Ontario, Bert grew up on a farm in Chatham but left at the age of 17 to join the Royal Canadian Air Force where he trained to be a meteorological technician. He met and married his wife Jean (Cluff) in Red Deer, Alberta. His career took them across Canada and to Europe, where they travelled whenever they had the chance. The family ended up in Nova Scotia in the early 70’s and it became their home.
After 20 years in the weather field, he retired and decided to become a retailer. He and Jean bought a small co-op store in Lower Middleton and started The Family Grocery and Feed Store. He enjoyed the farming part of the business so much that he bought a farm in Clarence where he and Jean raised purebred Hereford cattle before retiring to Wilmot and then Kentville.
Bert enjoyed gardening and sharing the bounty of his gardens. He was known in his neighborhoods for knocking on the door with something to share – flowers or produce from his garden, baked goods from Jean’s kitchen, or a cup of coffee and a chat. Bert was a lifelong NY Yankee fan and always watched the games. His son Mickey is an avid Blue Jays fan and they enjoyed attending ball games together in Toronto.
Our Dad loved animals and always had dog cookies in his pocket. He enjoyed feeding the birds and was pleased to welcome lovely hummingbirds and families of cardinals to his garden.
His biggest goal in life was to look after his family and he did that perfectly. He was taking care of us until his last breath. He can rest knowing he did everything he could for us and we couldn’t have asked for a better father, husband, and friend. We miss him so much already.
He is survived by his wife, Jean (Kentville); son Mickey (Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville); daughter Pam and son-in-law Charlie (Port George), and sister-in-law Penny (Jim) Rose, Red Deer. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, October 3, 2021 in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. His friend Pastor Chris Wickens will be officiating. All are welcome to attend. Masking, hand sanitizing, and social distancing protocols will be followed. Special thank you to the staff at the Valley Hospice, Kentville, who filled his last days with kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to Valley Hospice, Victorian Order of Nurses, or Annapolis Valley Palliative Care Program. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
