Wayne grew up in the Debert/Belmont area, attending the one-room Upper Belmont School and later Central Colchester High School, Onslow, NS. Almost all of his working days were in newspapers. Then to Hinton, AB, Sherwood Park, Grande Prairie, and Edmonton area, working for Bowes Publishing and Sun Media. He rose through the companies to become Executive Vice-President, retiring in 2007. A year later Wayne and Pat moved to Irvines Landing, Sunshine Coast, BC. They had a love for the outdoors and continued their passion for sailing (their schooner Brandelara), hiking, camping and travelling. While still in the Edmonton area, they took part in activities at Sunshine Bay Yacht Club, Seba Beach and Lake Wabamun. Wayne gave back to his communities through scouting (received a medal –Order of Scouting-Northern Region-in 1998) and through Rotary Club service. Being a ham radio operator was a keen interest.
