Obituary
BARBARA EILEEN KELCEY
(nee Noble)
1949-2021
Barbara passed away early on Tuesday, February 3rd in Selkirk, Manitoba.
She is survived by her sons Sean (Janne) of Selkirk, MB and Brian (Lindsey Wiebe) of Winnipeg, and grandsons Duncan, Morgan and Nicholas.
Barbara was born in London, England to a military family, living in Germany, Canada and Britain before marrying her late husband Nelson Kelcey in Toronto in 1968. While her sons were in school, she earned two degrees in history from the University of Victoria before earning a PhD in History from the University of Manitoba. Her academic work helped to revive the memory of a generation of forgotten women and their contributions to the history of Canada’s North. Barbara lived her last four years thanks to a liver transplant from an unknown donor, leaving family and friends grateful for dedicated care from Selkirk Hospital, Selkirk’s Tudor House, hospitals in Winnipeg and Toronto, and especially for patient help from neighbors and friends across Canada.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service and interment will be held (at a date to be confirmed later in 2021) at St. George’s Anglican Church, Wakefield, MB alongside her husband’s gravesite.
Condolences, photos and videos may be left on Barbara’s tribute wall
