Augustus (Junior)’s Obituary
Augustus (Junior) Weldon Penney, beloved husband of Shirley Penney, passed peacefully on February 7th, 2021 at the age of 86 and gained his angel wings. Junior was born to Augustus and Mildred Penney (nee Brake) on March 14th, 1934 in Summerside, NL. He married the love of his life Shirley Minnie Clara Gillam on January 28, 1957, and began their journey together through life for 64 years.
He was so very proud of his family as they were his pride and joy. Together Junior and Shirley expanded their family with Terry (Mona), Rod (Val), Greg (Roxanne), Phil (Nikki), and Shelley Esposto (Benny). However, nothing brought him greater pleasure than enjoying the company of his 10 grandchildren, Toby, Michaela, Ashley, Matthew, Jessica, Brandee, Krisdee, Kala, Sara and Lilly and 15 great-grandchildren. His face would simply light up whenever they came knocking.
Junior embarked on the workforce when he was just a young man and began working at the paper mill as a papermaker where he was employed for nearly 40 years before he retired. And what a retirement he enjoyed as he was never one to sit back and simply relax. He continued to seek new adventures.
Junior’s arrival to any home was easily distinguished by the sound of a side by side putting along and rest assured he always had a devoted dog upon his lap who hopped aboard for a ride. For those who knew him, and his admiration of animals, he was never without his beloved pets. He spent many of his days slinging logs with his son Rod in the sawmill, visiting his neighbours, or picking at things in his garage such as building model boat treasures for his grandkids; artifacts they will forever cherish. While in his seventies, it would appear that after many years of hearing his sons Greg and Phil play instruments, he too caught the musical bug and decided to give guitar lessons a try, to which he shared this love of music during his long-standing membership in the St. Paul’s Anglican Men’s Service Club. Although he enjoyed the company that came with being the father of four rambunctious boys, the apple of his eye came with the birth of his daughter Shelley, who not to be outdone by her brothers, had him wrapped around her little finger. Junior was known for his gentle soul and touched the hearts of many. He was always up for fun and had plenty of stories to tell when surrounded by friends and family. Junior and Shirley delighted in a night out to dance, and oh how they loved to dance. In his later years, they loved to throw a few darts at the Summerside Senior’s Dart League, where together they shared many laughs. They also enjoyed the company of others in the great outdoors and on their many travels. Whether it be a gravel pit camping trip, a weekend full of berry picking, setting a few snares at their camp in Quigley’s Pond, or soaking a line aboard a fishing boat, there was always fun to be had.
One of his greatest sorrows was the loss of his son Terry on December 25th of 2012. He spoke often of his late son with fond memories as he was the son who followed in his footsteps with a love of the paper mill and antique automobiles. His wish was to once again be reunited with Terry and his grandson Scott and all his family who passed before him.
He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Jim, Myrden, and Roland, his sisters Greta and Jean. He is also survived by his sister Verna Kennedy of Corner Brook.
In his final days, Junior was surrounded by the love of his family and the amazing team at the Corner Brook Long Term Home who became his second family this past year.
