Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that our family announces the passing of Annie Elizabeth Goldie (nee Cairney), a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, on November 30, 2021. Annie passed away in her Edson home at 88 years young with her loving husband by her side.
Annie was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and married her high school sweetheart Malcolm Goldie in 1955, a marriage to last 66+ years. After 5 children and many moves following Mal’s banking career, they finally settled at Erith Tie, a lumber mill on the Coal Branch. Once all the 5 children had left the nest, they made the move into Edson where she resided until her untimely death.
Annie graduated from Alexandra High School in Medicine Hat. After graduation she worked at the Maple Leaf Flour Mill in the flour testing lab. They made all sorts of baked items to test the flour which made them popular with the workers who got the samples. This is where her wonderful baking and cooking skills were perfected. After her marriage, she worked as a receptionist at the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool in Red Deer. Following a move to Picture Butte she worked as a Bookkeeper for Marshall Wells store. The next 22 years, she worked at home as a stay-at-home mom, raising 5 rambunctious (but perfect) children. This amazing experience set her up for the next career phase, working for Luscar Sterco Coal Mine south of Edson until her retirement in 1999.
She was a great many things to different people, one being ‘Mother Luscar’. At Luscar, she worked first as a Helicopter Logistics Coordinator then promoted to the Human Relations Administrator where she worked until she retired. She dedicated a considerable amount of time to the United Church, serving as President of the UCW Northern Division, singing in the choir, and working in the kitchen providing meals for the Harvest Supper, funeral lunches, and many other functions. Annie’s steadfast pride of Edson was a mantra she not only believed but lived. Through her volunteer activities in the community along with her dedication, care, and compassion for others, it was not surprising when Annie was awarded Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Edson & District Chamber of Commerce in February of 1997.
Annie started her love of golf later in life as it was a great activity for an energetic couple. She enjoyed learning the sport and travelling to golf schools in the USA. She was a member of the Edson Ladies Golf Club, where the golf course became a staple in her life on Wednesday nights. She was a great competitive golfer and could hold her own against her fiercest rivals, her sons and husband. So much so that in 1991 she won the Ladies Low Net Award in a Members Closed Tournament.
When Annie wasn’t out on the golf course, you could find her in the garden or her greenhouse. Always the green thumb, Annie enjoyed ‘piddling’ around with her flowers, tomatoes, and vegetables. She loved the outdoors, berry picking and making jams, jellies, and anything else she could preserve. She was a wonderful seamstress and sewed many clothes, costumes and in the most recent years, quilts for the seniors.
She is survived by her husband, 5 children(spouses), 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Annie was predeceased by her parents and 3 siblings.
