Annabelle Ang Short Chatman

It is with great sadness that the family of Annabelle Short Chatman, or Ang, as she was affectionately known, announce her sudden passing on April 16th at the young age of 52 years.
Ang was born on Nov 27, 1968 to Joseph and Mary Short of Deep Bight, NL.
On October 26th, 1996, Ang married the love of her life, Wade Chatman, and they celebrated 24 years together. They built a wonderful life together that included Ang taking on the honour of being a second mom to Wade’s beautiful daughter, Tanya. Ang loved Tanya unconditionally, was always worried about her well being and wanted nothing but the best for her. Ang was so proud of all Tanya’s accomplishments. Undoubtedly, her proudest days were when her beautiful grandchildren came into her life. Joseph, Evan and Gracie were her pride and joy – her everything. One could never have a conversation with Ang, without her giving an update on how they were doing, including the countless pictures that she always shared. She was a proud wife, mother and grandmother.
Ang was an amazing worker, who had the most remarkable people skills. She lit up every room that she walked into, and did everything to make you feel as if you were the most important person in the world. For a number of years, Ang was employed by the Port Blandford-Winterbrook Development Association. Her job was to access Government grants and funding, in order to help people who needed support to find employment in the area. She took so much pride in the work of the association, including her passion to grow the local daycare program.
Ang’s work impacted and benefited so many people – people who became lifelong friends forever indebted to her kindness. In October 2007, Ang was hired by the then MHA of the Terra Nova District, Paul Oram, as his Constituency Assistant (CA). Ang met Paul in 2003, during his first campaign and immediately began a lifetime relationship that would bring Ang into the political arena. Ang was the most amazing CA that any MHA/ Minister could ever have dreamt of having. She tirelessly helped to represent the district and its residents. She was the front line worker who, again, was the voice for the many people in need of help or direction. Ang did her job with commitment and passion every single moment of every single day – including evenings and weekends. She was a friend to all MHAs, Ministers and staff. She was one of the most influential and easily one of the most liked government workers. In 2009, when Paul stepped down as the MHA, Ang took on the role of Constituency Assistant for the new MHA, Sandy Collins.
Sandy and Ang were inseparable. They would often joke and refer to her as his “second wife”. Ang and Sandy, did countless functions together over the six years that they represented the people of Terra Nova. She was the absolute best and wanted nothing more than to ensure the people of the district had the best representation possible. In 2015, Ang finished her work with government. After leaving government she accepted a position with Burry’s Shipyard where she would work until she began having complications associated with her diabetes.
Shortly thereafter, she began having complications associated with her diabetes that she had coped with for so long. Health issues made life challenging for Ang, however she always remained upbeat and positive. Thankfully, Ang recovered from sickness and a significant surgery, and in 2018 took on the role of Special Assistant, to her former boss, Paul. She was instrumental in recruiting residents to the new Personal Care Home, Bethesda Manor in Gander. Ang excelled as always, and was happy to be working along side of her friend once again. She played a big part in the project’s success.
In 2019, Ang was asked to take on the role of Constituency Assistant to the newly elected MHA for the Bonavista District, Craig Pardy. She was so excited to be back involved in politics and return to the role she loved so much. Like they say, “Once you get politics in your blood, it’s nearly impossible to get it out”. Ang often admitted that herself. After another two years of dedicated service to the people of NL, health issues would again sideline her and lead to her resignation. This was not an easy decision as she enjoyed her job and thought so much of MHA Pardy.
Unfortunately, her retirement would last less than two weeks. Ang was told by her physician that she needed to have an additional amputation due to the effects of diabetes. Ang had the surgery. The Doctor felt that the surgery was a success. Her family and friends were so relieved. However, on the day that she was to be released and go home, she passed away suddenly. This tragedy as left an incredibly large void that will always be felt by all those fortunate enough to have known this this amazing, beautiful lady.
