Ann MacPhee Gouthro Thursday December 23rd 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Theresa MacPhee (nee Gouthro) at the Glengarry Memorial Hospital on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at the age of 82. Beloved wife of Donald Joseph MacPhee and mother to Mary Beth Barrans of Kanata, and sister to Monica Brewbaker (William) of Wake Forest, North Carolina and Leanna MacLeod (Laird) of Black Brook, Cape Breton Island, NS. Ann was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, NS to Gregory and Elizabeth Gouthro (nee MacPhee). In 1950 Ann and her family moved to Washington, DC. After high school in the states, Ann returned to Nova Scotia to attend St. Frances Xavier University where she graduated from in 1960. Ann accepted a teaching position at the Glengarry District High School in 1960. She taught for a few years and then returned to the States. On a trip to Alexandria to visit friends, Ann met Donald Joseph and they were married in 1967. After their marriage, Ann and Don eventually settled in Alexandria, and Ann started teaching again at Glengarry District High School. She retired in 2001. During their almost 55 years together, Ann was always involved and supportive of Don’s love of Scottish fiddle music. They enjoyed their trips to Scotland and attending the Fiddle Festivals at St. Ann’s Gallic College in Cape Breton.
Ann was a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 45 years and she was a founding member of the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame. After her retirement she volunteered at the Glengarry Memorial Hospital. At the request of the family, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Finnan’s Basilica on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 11 am. Interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria (613-525-2772). As expressions of sympathy Memorial Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Glengarry Memorial Hospital Foundation, or to the Ottawa Civic Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
