Obituary of Angus Hinson
ANGUS ROBERT HINSON
December 16, 1953 – January 31, 2021
Our loss is heaven’s gain.
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Angus peacefully in the Ottawa Civic Hospital following surgery. He passed from this earthly life to be with The Boss. Angus will be forever loved, remembered and missed by his loving wife of four months, Elizabeth (Brose-Murphy), her two sons Robert and Timothy Murphy, and Tim’s girlfriend Heather Vandersleen. Lovingly remembered by his South Carolina family, Charles Potter Jr. and wife Margaret, Kimberly White and husband Lorne, grandchildren Dawn Mabry and husband Nick, Amy Roe and husband J.D., Melissa Redman, Brittany Garrett, Nichole Haigler, great-grandchildren, Merritt Redman, Greyson Roe and Ivey Lorick. He will also be dearly missed by his sister, Cherie Gilfillan and husband Roger, and Kitt, Amy, Krysta and families. Predeceased by his parents Angus and Johnnie Lea (Black), and wife Pat (Jaquay).
During his career, Angus had more than 30 years of management and hands-on experience in waste management, hazardous material shipping and environment, health physics/radiological controls, and health and safety in the commercial and government nuclear services industries. Much of his employment was with Atkins, Chem-Nuclear Systems, and SNC-Lavalin, where he held various job titles as a nuclear equipment operator, project support specialist/technician, supervisor, project manager, director and acting vice-president.
Angus was born in Camden, South Carolina and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina where his father was a surgeon and his mother was a stay-at-home mom, who also dealt in real estate. He travelled much during his career, but his home base was Columbia, South Carolina. Two months prior to his marriage to Elizabeth, Angus moved to Pembroke, Ontario, Canada and started pursuing his plans to become a permanent resident.
Angus was always cheerful and easy-going. He enjoyed meeting and being with people. He was a self-taught jack-of-all-trades handyman, who always figured things out no matter the time or energy expended. His favourite expression when faced with a challenge was “You think you’ve got me, don’t you”. He will be remembered for being a kind, gentle, funny person, but most of all for being a loving person. Anyone who met Angus was profoundly affected by him and his kindness. His legacy is his deep faith, his strong work ethic and his devotion to family. Angus will be greatly loved and missed by all who crossed his path in life.
The family wishes to thank Dr. John Sinclair and the neuro staff at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their excellent care of Angus, and the love and compassion shown to both Angus and Elizabeth in his final days. Also, a very heartfelt and special thank you to Angus’ friend and our Pastor, Bruce Thompson, who provided spiritual support at a time when Angus really needed it, and for making hospital visits to Ottawa, three trips in two days.
In lieu of flowers, please consider doing an act of kindness for someone, or spreading some joy through humor. In remembrance of Angus, please consider a donation to St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, Pembroke, Ontario.
As per Angus’ wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to constraints of COVID-19, Angus’ funeral will be smaller than we’d like, with a private family service on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Malcolm, Deavitt & Binhammer Funeral Home Chapel, Pembroke, Ontario. The family invites you to share in this service which will be live-streamed and available online. Our family hopes to have a service at a future date in Lexington, South Carolina, once the borders open.
My sweetie, I’ve lost your comforting, warm arms, but you’ve left me your heart. We only had a short time together, but filled it with a lifetime of love. And now I’ll say the words to you which you said to me every night, “Sleep well my love, sweet dreams, and God bless you.”

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Angus
