Obituary for
Allister Young
Young, Allister – Age 85, Truro. Dad passed away on August 2, 2021 at the age of 85 in the QEII – Halifax Infirmary after a fall at home. He was the last surviving member of his family. Dad was born in Stewiacke, NS to the late Alexander and Elizabeth (Delaney) Young.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Greta (Yorke); daughter, Susan (Ken) Nicoll, Leduc, AB and their daughters, Sarah, Katie and Emily; daughter, Robin (David) Larder, Truro, NS and their daughters, Madeline and Isabella; son, John-Allister (Kimberly McFarlane), Edmonton, AB and their children, Gregory and Alyssa. He is also survived by great grandchildren, Andrew, Cassandra, Brooklynn, Connor, Rhiannon and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Group Captain “The Colonel” Alec Young and Paul and grandson, Bradley.
Dad was born in his childhood home on Main Street in Stewiacke, NS. At a young age, he ventured west to Toronto, ON and there, he started a rewarding career at Canada Post. He met and married Mom in 1958. Dad, Mom and the three children moved to Dartmouth, NS in 1972 where Dad took a position with Security and Investigations at Canada Post. In 1976, the family moved to Shubenacadie, NS and soon they were running the Rose Bowl Flower Shop together while Dad was still at the post office. Mom and Dad spent some winters in Florida watching their Blue Jays at spring training and several more with their golfing friends in Myrtle Beach.
In 2006, they moved to Truro, NS which gave Mom a chance to work on her golf game and Dad took the opportunity to become “Bonky” to his two special granddaughters, Madeline and Isabella. Dad became chauffeur as well as dance, piano and violin recital observer. Dad loved sitting in their living room watching and listening to the girls play piano.
Dad loved the fall because this meant: hunting season, John would be home and it was time to go to “the camp”. He enjoyed the camp for over 45 years with many friends and family, telling stories, playing crib, making memories and sometimes hunting. As Dad always said, “the camp is the last place I can enjoy a strong drink and a good cigar indoors”.
As an avid reader, Dad would read anything and everything. If you had a question, he had an answer. Rarely would you receive a card or visit without a newspaper clipping included. He was a very proud Canadian and always paid tribute to the troops on Remembrance Day.
He was not afraid to speak his mind and to stand up for what was simply the right thing and he would stand firmly behind others as well. He was fond of a quote from Winston Churchill, “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”
The family would like to thank the staff in both the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS and the QEII – Halifax Infirmary. As well as a very special thank you to Dr. Lorraine Pelley and her staff.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS.
