With sadness and gratitude for a life well lived, the family of Alice Mombourquette announce her peaceful passing on October 19, 2021, St. Peter’s N.S. Alice, Nanny, was born in Tracadie on May 29, 1934 to William and Bertha Petipas. She was the 8th of 14 children. Alice graduated from the University of Toronto and was one of the first dental hygienists in Nova Scotia. She began her career in Richmond County where she met the love of her life, Maxie. They were married October 14, 1957. Maxie predeceased her in 2007. Together they raised six sons: Arthur, Victoria, B.C.; Carmen (Sharon), Kathryn and Jessie; Blair (Romona), Tylor and Morgan; Ivan (Susan), Cole, Jennie, Ashlee, Ryker, Jane, Sam, and Andrew; Mark (Carmen) Alana (Mike), Luke (Chiara); Neil (Gayle), Abigayle; andgreat granddaughter Paige, all living in Alberta. She is survived by her brothers Anthony, John (Chris), Gerard (Ethel), sister-in-law Lucia Mombourquette, many nieces and nephews and friends. Alice will also be dearly missed by Karen, Alicia and family – Nanny with the white hair loved you all.
Alice was known throughout Cape Breton as the ‘teeth lady’ as she traveled from school to school attending to the dental health needs of thousands of children. When she was out and about in the community, Alice was frequently stopped as people recognized her from their days in school. In retirement, she served terms on the Richmond County School Board.
Alice served her community through her commitment to Holy Guardian Angels Church, service clubs, and anyone who was in need of food, clothing, or words of encouragement. Alice’s nightly prayers always included the needs of others. Her grandchildren looked forward to the parcels of Nanny jammies, crocheted and quilted blankets, and pie for breakfast. Nanny’s rolls, cookies, fudge, and squares were always plentiful.
Alice loved to travel and in retirement she traveled the world. Her strong faith has now led Alice to her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Saviour. Visitation will be held in Holy Guardian Angels Parish Funeral Parlor on Monday, October 25 from 7:00 p.m.– 9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, October 26 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. John Yake. Burial will follow in Holy Guardian Angels Cemetery. Due to COVID restrictions proof of vaccination is required.
