Obituary for
Alexander MacKinnon
MacKinnon, Alexander – Age 81, Bible Hill. It is with great sadness that the family of Alex MacKinnon, announces his death on December 5th, 2021 at his home in Bible Hill.
Born in Sydney to the late Sandy and Mary MacKinnon, he was this couple’s second child. Sandy and Mary raised their family of five children on Park Street in Sydney. After high school, Alex enrolled into the Air Force where he learned to work on the radar systems of the CF-105 fighter. After three years in the Air Force, Alex returned to Sydney.
It was in high school where Alex met Frankie, the love of his life, and the couple were married in 1962 and remained devoted to one another throughout their 59 years of marriage. Alex’s love of learning and teaching led him to complete his teaching certificate in Truro, followed by his Bachelors and Master’s degree at the University of Maine. It was during his Master’s degree that Alex and the family developed their passion for camping and exploring the East Coast of the United States. This included many summers in Old Orchard Beach, Maine where the family enjoyed the beach while Alex studied at the University. Once the family stopped travelling, Alex and the family settled into their second home on Caribou Island. The cottage was truly his happy place, where he would spend his days watching the fishing boats, feeding and entertaining any and all visitors, taking his grandchildren on tractor and boat rides and continually improving the cottage with the help of family and friends.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Frankie (Townsend); his children, Sandra (Charlie), Keith (Moya) and Blair as well as his sisters, Barbara Currie, Joanne White (Jerry), and Elizabeth MacKinnon. He was the grandfather of Alex, Andrew, Catherine, Daniel and Sarah as well as a great grandfather to Kennedy. He was the beloved Uncle to Tom (Marilyn) and Lynn. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Audry MacKinnon; special nephew, Abe Townsend and brother-in-law, Blaise Currie.
Alex was known by many names, Big Al, Grampy, Happy, Uncle Alex, Great Grampy, Poppy, but the one that we hold closest to our hearts is Dad.
His family grieves him with the knowledge of a life well lived and the gratitude of eternal peace well earned.
A special thank you goes out to the VON and Palliative Care and the many family and friends that allowed our Dad to fulfill his wish to die at home in the loving arms of his wife.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada, Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation – Palliative Care or charity of choice.
