With family at his side Al passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at the age of 85. Predeceased by his parents Lily (nee Giangualano) and Ugo Mattiussi, his sister Carmen (Real) and brother Jack (Leona).
Beloved spouse of Ghislaine Proulx. Loved father of Mark and Jason (Ceri). Proud and devoted grandfather of Maia. Lovingly remembered by former spouse Diane Esther. Al will be dearly missed by his siblings Richard (late Micheline), Michael (Bonnie) and Clara (late Claude). Fondly missed by his extended family Fran (Steve), Eric (Kim) and Conrad along with his bonus grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario, Al graduated from Ryerson before embarking upon a notable career in the Steel Industry. Beginning at Stelco in Hamilton he moved to American Steel in Michigan before rounding out his career as the Vice President of Manufacturing and Operations at Nelson Steel in Stoney Creek. As a specialist in his field, Al holds two patents in steel manufacturing processes. Upon retirement, Al embraced his hobbies of racquetball, badminton and golf and developed keen skills in woodworking. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and always appreciated a good piece of apple pie.
In accordance with Al’s wishes, there will be a private cremation. A celebration of life will be announced and held at a future date. As an expression of sympathy in Al’s honour, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or The Burlington Humane Society.
