On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, we lost our father, grandfather and best friend, Alan Patrick Gillis. Our family has been shaken due to the sudden and tragic loss of Dad. He was our rock and we will be forever changed.
Our Dad was a man of many hats. He took life with a grain of salt and lived it to the fullest. Not that we always agreed, but so be it. Dad was a man of his own character, living by his own code of life. Some got it, some didn’t. Nobody was left behind. Dad always helped the down and out. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and just life in general.
Dad had many businesses including his favourite, East Coast Recycling. He enjoyed long-haul trucking and spending time on his ship, the Cape Ann III. She was his biggest challenge and he loved it.
Dad was predeceased by his beloved father, Patrick Alan Gillis; his aunt, Katie; uncle, Mickey; and cousin, Marilyn.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Emily (Nathan), Sarah (Melbert) and Katie-May (Jackie); his forever sons, Steven, Joseph, and Michael; granddaughter, Autumn and grandsons, Seth, Emmett, Lukey and Wesley, who were the world to him; his partner in crime for 27 years, Deborah Markham, as well as his mother and many siblings.
A celebration of Alan’s life will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, September 3 from 4-7 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
