Alan wanted us to tell you he has just gone on a little walk-about, tho’ we don’t know quite where. Born in Hamilton Ontario, to Florence (Bradford) and Sidney Dixon, Al was raised in Ottawa, graduating from Nepean High and Carleton U. Our renaissance man enjoyed an exciting time span to live in. He was a Queen’s Scout, Air Force Reservist, Theolog, 10 years a High School History Teacher; for 38 years, along with Helen, he was owner, buyer, display creator, and picture framer, of the Snowbird Galleries/Hummdinger Canadiana Gift Shop in Golden Lake, where he delighted in talking with the imaginative people whose creations and books we sold and with so many appreciative customers from near and very far. In retirement, Alan was still a traveller – B.C. to NFLD,Cape Cod, Turkey, Scotland, Morocco, N.Z. and Australia; and always, to his last days, he was a home renovator of highest standards, developing great skills as a carpenter, electrician, dry-waller, maybe not so much a plumber….
Alan was the best friend, husband, and love of Helen’s life for over 60 years; proud and loving father of Ian (Lina) of Peterborough, and Margaret Thomas (André) of Nova Scotia; caring and admiring grandfather of Sarah Thomas in N.S., Tyler Dixon (Kahlan) in Edmonton, and Ben Dixon (Taylor) in Edinburgh.
Al’s sense of humour and long phone calls will also be greatly missed by his brother Philip (late Inez and late Eileen), now living in Carp, niece Catherine Haines (Douglas), and nephew David (Angelina), and by many good friends whom he has been so glad to have in his life. Through the years and across the country. Remember Carol Burnett’s sign-off – “I’m so glad we had this time together just to share a laugh and sing a song….”
The family has great appreciation for the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Ottawa Hospital, Renfrew Victoria Hospital and Hospice Renfrew, whose interest and concern for patients as individuals made this past year bearable and worthwhile. Gratitude also to MAiD for a timely and peaceful final curtain at home with family.
Professional services have been entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew and cremation has taken place. A luncheon in celebration of Alan’s life will be held at a later date. If you wish to commemorate Alan’s memory now, a donation to the David Suzuki Foundation, Farm Radio International, Cancer Research through the Ottawa Hospital, Hospice Renfrew, or a charity of your special interest would be appreciated by the family.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, FRIENDS.
