It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Catherine (Cholock) Cosman on April 19, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sydney Mines on June 11, 1932, Mary was the eldest of eleven children of the late John and Blanche (Mills) Cholock. Mary moved to River Bourgeois with the great love of her life, the late Kenneth Cosman, where they raised their family.
A devout Catholic, Mary was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, a choir member and a proud member of The Catholic Women’s League for 60 years. She never missed a service, whether in person or via broadcast. Up until her final days, Mary continued to seek solace through prayer.
Mary was known around the community as a self-proclaimed “social butterfly” with many loving and loyal friends. She was an avid bingo player and loved her card games, especially when
winning. Mary enjoyed going out for drives, cappuccinos, chit-chatting and music – never passing up an opportunity to dance when a good fiddle tune came on.
In her younger years, Mary and her late husband Ken enjoyed travelling in their RV with their children in tow. Once empty nesters, they became snowbirds who spent many enjoyably warm winters in Florida.
There are many special memories her family – whom Mary loved so dearly – will forever cherish and they’ll remember her for her sunny disposition, strength, determination and perseverance. It’s safe to say, whenever they bite into a tea biscuit or a cabbage roll, they will instantly think of their mother/grandmother, hear her contagious laughter and see the bright light that surrounded her always.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Kenneth Gregory Cosman; brothers, Hubert and George Cholock; sister, Annie Cousins; sisters-in-law, Rose Cholock, Helen Cholock, Linda Cosman and brothers-in-law, Bert Bradley and Leroy Cousins.
Mary is survived by her four children; Debra (David) Digout, River Bourgeois, Kenneth Jr. (Joann) Cosman, River Bourgeois, Maureen (Neil) Burke, River Bourgeois, Brenda (Jeff) Bourque, Halifax, and her grandchildren, each of whom she was so proud; Tanya, Christian, Shauna, Tasha Lynn, Joel, Alisha and her great-grandchildren; Ella, Addison, Reid, Catherine, Alexis, Sophie and Foster. She also leaves to mourn; her brothers, Michael, Toronto; Leonard (Florence), Mill Creek; sisters, Helen Clarke (Collie MacDonald) Sydney Mines; Francis Bradley (Ernie Tremblett) Sydney Mines; Dorothy (Billy) MacIntyre, Ontario; Patty (Paul) Lamey, New Brunswick; Barbara (Gordie) Walker, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Billy Cosman, Detroit; Donald Cosman, Mabou; Earle Cosman, Halifax and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is forever grateful to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, who gave such compassionate love and care to our mother in her final days.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Mary’s wake will take place at the River Bourgeois Visitation Parlour on Tuesday, April 27, from 2-4 pm and 6-8pm.
Social distancing protocols will be followed.
Funeral mass will be by invitation only, considering Covid restrictions, and will take place on Wednesday, April 28, at St John the Baptist Church, River Bourgeois, at 11:00am, with Fr. John Yake presiding.
Memorial donations can be made to the River Bourgeois Visitation Parlour or St John the Baptist Cemetery.
