It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death our beloved Pasquale at the age of 79 on April 13, 2021.
Loving husband of 56 years to wife Rosa (nee Naccarato), devoted father to Theresa (Arthur Wong), Sam (Pamela Smith), John (Ivana Medaglia) and Carlo (Rosa Spadafora), proud grandfather of Anthony, Emily, Carmine, David, Jessica, Nicholas, Ida and Rosa.
Beloved son of the late Teresa Veltri and the late Salvatore Iuliano. Dear brother to the late Domenico Iuliano (late Emma), late Angelina Mele (Salvatore), Barbara Mele (Antonio), late Giuseppe Iuliano (Lina), Gianetto Iuliano, Rosetta Guzzo (Luigi), Antonio Iuliano (Angela), Caterina Giramonte (Vincenzo), and Mario Iuliano (Rosetta). Brother in law to the late Mario Naccarato (Ortenzia), the late Elena Sacco (late Settimio), late Emma Iuliano (Domenic), Lisa Scanga (late Mario), late Mafalda Cuglietta (late Settimio), late Ercolino Naccarato (late Marianna), Anselmo Naccarato (Amelia). He will be fondly remembered by many, many nieces and nephews.
Pasquale lived his life with passion, a generous spirit and an abundance of love for family and friends alike. Born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy into a large family, where he cultivated his lifelong passion for the land. He was working these fields when he saw Rosa for the first time, approaching with her father for a visit following the engagement of Domenic and Emma, and quite rightly declared “This is the woman that I will marry!” Together, they established a loving home for their four children in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He raised his children to believe in the value of hard work and self sufficiency, and he never let them forget that they were adored. For 30 years he worked on the rail lines of Algoma Steel where he was legendary for his feats of strength. Gregarious and open-hearted Pasquale cultivated friendships with the same joy and abundance that he nurtured his garden, his wine and his salami. Even into his 70’s there was never a man less afraid of hard work, particularly when it was done for the benefit of his family.
In his retirement years he moved with his wife to be closer to some of his children and grandchildren in Ottawa. In his community of Stittsville he became known as the friendly gardener, attracting neighbours into his backyard oasis and helping them build and tend to their own gardens. These years were special, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with his entire family in Mexico, Rosa’s 80th birthday with extended family and friends and his favourite yearly trip to the cottage outside of Sault Ste. Marie with Teresa and Steve Churchill and family. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he loved to tell each of them that they were “his favourite”.
Pasquale was a man you always wanted to share a glass of wine and a story with, where every stranger was just a friend you hadn’t met yet. Even through the worst of his illness, he cultivated these loving friendships with his nurses and personal care workers.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Laurie, Dr. Reaume, Dr. Cook and Dr. Lee and the many personal support workers including George Phiri, who together gave him the blessing of several years of time to enjoy with his family. We would also like to thank the staff at the Ottawa General Hospital Oncology ward and the Irving Greenberg Cancer Centre.
Due to COVID restrictions, a private funeral service will be held. For those wishing, the service will be live streamed on April 17 at 11am and the live stream can be accessed through the funeral home website at www.hpmcgarry.ca.
For those who wish, donations may be made in the memory of Pasquale to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
