Mierins, Egils “Doc”
August 16, 1943 – March 20, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Egils “Doc” Mierins on March 20, 2021. Egils, in his 78th year, was a beloved partner and best friend of Kathryn McLaren. Loving father of Jamey (Tonya), Kathryn, and Krystina (Joseph). Special Grandpa to Freya and Fiametta. Dear son of the late Janis and Hilda Melita (née Erglis). Dear brother of John (Renate) and the late Arnis (Colleen), both of Ottawa. Also survived by niece Lisa, and nephews Jeff, John, and Arnie.
Egils was born in Latvia and immigrated to Canada as a child. After studying at the University of Ottawa and completing residencies in Toronto and Halifax, he established a practice as a rheumatologist in 1968. For many decades he supported patients throughout the Ottawa Valley and subsequent generations of medical students when he was affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Towards the end of his life, Egils fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning a farm.
A private family service will be held on Wednesday March 24, 2021 followed by interment in Beechwood Cemetery. For those wishing, the service will be recorded and it will be available on the Hulse, Playfair & McGarry website later in the week at www.hpmcgarry.ca

Dear Aunt Kathryn:
We are so, so sorry for the loss of Uncle/Great Uncle Egils !! Such an amazing, intelligent & caring Man he was !! Although Sorry is never enough but the Cherished Memories in the hearts of Myself, Dayton Jr & Michaela Uncle Egils was an amazing man & our memories especially for the kids are all the times yous had & welcomed them into your home !! They absolutely loved the time spent with their Uncle Egils & all that he taught them & Special memories always spent together !! Dayton & Michaela truely looked up to him & loved him more then he’ll ever know or all the great times they shared on the tractor & four wheeler & to just be given that trust & expierence !! Not to mention helping you both with all of the precious animals & helping to feed them !! There’s just so much & although he may no longer be with us, he remains in our Hearts with Cherished & loving memories forever !! May he have found peace !! Your also in our thoughts Aunt Kathryn & we’ve not stopped thinking of you as well as all of his Brilliant Children of Uncle Egils, that I had the pleasure to meet at a young age & over the years !! May you all find Peace at such a difficult time knowing he will always still be with you all xoxo !!
I was saddened to hear about the passing of Egils. He was the first physician that I worked for during the 1980’s at his office on McLeod Street. He was an amazing and caring physician and I often think back to our working together during those years. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.
