Obituary
ELIZABETH JUNE SCARLETT
of Sundridge
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Elizabeth June Scarlett, on March 20, 2021 in her 87th year from cancer. She was a loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched. June told her Doctor in the hospital: “I have had more grins than anything else in my life.”
Born in Sundridge, Ontario on June 2, 1934 to John Sedore and Emma (Welch) the youngest of six children MacPherson (Violet), Charles (Joyce), John (Marg), Guy (Betty), Frances (all predeceased). Mom shared many stories of farmyard and lakeside adventures as a young girl growing up on the shores of Lake Bernard. She loved to retell the story of stepping on a snake as she ran toward the lake through the tall grasses trailing behind her five older siblings or sitting on the horse drawn wagon with her father as she loved to help him on the farm. She excelled in school loving all subjects and being a member of the marching band. Mom’s natural connection to children, love of learning, and storytelling abilities combined to make her an exceptional teacher, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and great aunt. Mom left her teaching career to enjoy raising her five children and volunteered to teach Sunday school. She was an avid curler and bowler for many years. Mom created ‘special moments’ for those she loved whether it was a hat sent in the mail after a ‘hockey hat trick’, delicious baked cookies, blueberry pies, a pair of cozy, granny slippers, a thoughtful card, a phone call, an entertaining game of cards, cross crib or a cup of tea at her kitchen table everyone knew June would help or know what to say.
Granny/Gramma was known for her incredible quilting and knitting (sweaters, mitts, hats, slippers were her specialty) ensuring that relatives and friends received beautiful handmade treasures. Granny was known for her unique “granny slippers” that were well-loved in Australia and England and she was nicknamed “the Cookie Lady” by many. Granny could rhyme off hockey stats and loved watching the playoffs wearing her Crosby jersey and cheering for her Penquins. Mom created special photo albums for us all to cherish. There was a lively side to Mom that surfaced around the campfire with some entertaining songs, stories, and poems that will always be remembered. The infamous Horseshoe Tournament was started in 1998 and became a family reunion tradition.
Beloved wife of John Orville (pre-deceased 2015) for 60 years, she took great comfort in her last days knowing she would soon be reunited with the love of her life. We believe Mom and Dad are already throwing ringers in a golden horseshoe game together. Loving mother to Brian (Kim), Del (Joy), Kirby, Darlene (Dave), Brenda (Nick), devoted grandmother to Kate, Chad (Justine), Tina (Laura), Aimee (Colin), Rebecca, Christopher, Daniel, Merissa (Andrew), Dustin, Alicia (Kris), Kayla, Liam, Rowan, and proud great grandmother to Tanner, Tye, Tempest, Icarus, Erika, Elayna, Clayton and Adaline. Mom will lovingly be remembered by many nieces and nephews, cousins, and in-laws. She made friends everywhere she went and her new adventure in the fall at Chartwell’s Muskoka Traditions Retirement Residence was no exception.
