Donald’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Donald Mullins announce his passing at Corner Brook Long Term Care on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at the age of 87 years. Donald was born on April 13, 1933, in Rencontre East, Fortune Bay. He began teaching after he completed Grade Eleven in 1951 at the age of 18 years. His first school was located in Morrisville, Bay d’Espoir. He spent one year there teaching all subjects from Grade 1 – 10 in a one room school. Following this, he taught for two years in Dawson’s Cove (renamed Sandyville). He returned to university in St. John’s during 1954-1955 to obtain an “A” teaching license. In the fall of 1955, he became principal in Tacks Beach, Placentia Bay. That was where he met and married his wife, Juanita, in December 1956. From 1956 – 1961 he served as principal in Hermitage, Fortune Bay. They then moved to Belloram where he was principal for 7 years. The years from 1964 to 1967 were spent as a principal in a three room school in Harbour Buffett, when the school closed due to resettlement Donald and his young family were resettled to Lark Harbour in the fall of 1967. He served 21 years, seven of which were spent as principal, at St. James All Grade in Lark Harbour. After 36 years in June of 1988, Donald retired from the teaching profession. As an educator, he touched the lives of many people. He was an upstanding member of the community of Lark Harbour, holding the position as Mayor, and his involvement in the church for many years as lay reader and treasurer. In his early retirement, he enjoyed camping, visiting friends and a good game of cards including 45’s and frustration. In recent years he loved walking the boardwalk and beach at Bottle Cove collecting sea glass, he also enjoyed tending his apple tree in the backyard. Donald leaves to mourn his loving devoted wife of 64 years, Juanita. His children: Alvin (Hannah), Roy (Rose), Ken (Elta), Brian, Brenda (Keith), Wanda, and Cathy, his 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter, as well a large circle of nieces and nephews.
