Obituary for
William “Bill” Allison Smith
William (Bill) A. Smith
10-21-1964 to 02-27-2021
William had been fighting renal cell carcinoma for nine months now and although we knew his time on earth was going to be shortened, he suffered a stroke and was taken sooner than expected. He died at home with his close friend and co-parent, Cathy and his three children surrounding him. It was how he would have wanted to go…fast, painless and with the people he loved most in this world. We take great comfort that he is in a better place and watching over us.
William was raised in Oxford Junction, Nova Scotia. ‘Billy’ developed his affection for maple syrup as a young boy when he would go to the sugar woods and help his father collect maple syrup. Friends who knew Billy growing up describe him as a harmless prankster with a mischievous smile and a giggle that was contagious. This rang true throughout his life and if you put on the Three Stooges you would hear his laughter clear through the house.
William’s passion for the theatre was evident to all who knew him. He was a natural actor and performed in several theatre productions with his friends at Eventurous Theatre Company. His family and friends were so proud to watch him excel as the lead – Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks in the musical production, Annie. He had the recent opportunity to take a trip of a lifetime to see Bette Midler in New York City. It was a dream come true for William and the memories of this extraordinary experience brought him tremendous joy and happiness.
Bill was a beautiful singer and was singing with the Millstream Chorus for over fifteen years. Singing and music was a huge part of his life. He filled his home with music, sung to those he loved the most, that is, his three children, Connor, Cameron and Cassandra.
Bill was a family man whose three children were his whole world. He was an exceptional father who showed his love for his children every single day of his life. Everything he did was for them and his children knew that they were his number one priority and that they could always count on him being there for them. Bill will be greatly missed by his long-time friend and co-parent, Cathy and his children, Connor, Cameron and Cassandra. Their family unit will forever feel that a part of them is missing.
The loss of ‘Billy’ will also be felt deeply by his family including his sisters, Cheryl, Dorothy and Cathy as well as his nieces and nephews, Mathew, Laura, Nathan, Alec, Wesley and Gregory also his mother and two brothers. He was predeceased by his father, Allison.
William will also be missed by his cousin, Ken, whom he spoke about right up until his final days. Ken was someone Bill greatly admired and often spoke about the positive impact he had on his life; his childhood friend and ‘sister of the heart’, Diane will miss him terribly.
William was loved and will be mourned by his ‘in-law’ family, Fred, Marion, Karen, Pat, Rodney, Debbie, Christa, Randy and Raymond, as well as his nieces and nephews, Breanna, Georgia, Isaiah, Elijah and Maritza.
Bill was an active and respected member of our community. He volunteered with the Kinsmen, at our local church and was a generous friend to anyone in need. He had such a positive impact on all those who knew him it is difficult to list all of those who will mourn the loss of this exceptional man.
“Spending one wonderful day with somebody you love is more rewarding than any possession”
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we regret that we will have to limit the number of people who can attend Williams’s Celebration of Life. We would encourage you to share your stories and well wishes on Bill’s Facebook Memorial page. We will be sure to share these stories and your comments at his Celebration of Life.
It was Bill’s greatest wish that his children receive a secondary education and he was overjoyed when he learned that his youngest, Cassandra and her brother, Cameron were both accepted into university for this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to their education fund at cassandrasmithxoxo@gmail.com.
