It is with heavy hearts, that the family announces that Lena Kuka, age 91, passed away peacefully, at her residence, Princess Court Long Term Care Facility, in Dryden, on Monday, February 1, 2021.
Lena was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill), her son Daniel, her grandson, Jason Ovenstone and her 10 siblings. Surviving are her children, Gail Pencoff, Randy (Teresa) and Marlene (Bill) Ovenstone. Grandchildren Bill Pencoff, Stephanie Landon, Ryan Kuka, Rae-Lyn Kuka and Adam (Dani) Kuka. Great grandchildren Kai, Kiandra, Da’Naiyah, Kairhys and Nazryn. Rae-Lyn’s children called her “Candy Gramma”.
Lena and Bill were Sioux Narrows pioneers. After Lena was widowed at an young age, she raised her four children, working various jobs to support her family,
Lena was famous for her Red River Cereal bread that she baked daily, selling through Allen’s Meat Market. She also baked white bread and cinnamon buns. Mom was also a great cook.
Her rock flower garden, on the hill, had people stopping to admire them on a regular basis.
After leaving Sioux Narrows, Lena lived in Kenora for a number of years, prior to moving to Dryden. While living in Kenora, she was employed as a cook at Pinecrest Home Long Term Care Facility. Her last residence in Kenora was at Parkview apartments, where she made many friends.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
The family would like to say special thanks to Dr. Cortens, all the nurses, PSWs, the staff and management at Princess Court for the incredible care provided during her residency there. We could not have asked for a better place for Mom to spend her last few years.
