Obituary
Susan Jane Cox (née Townson)
March 11, 1946 – January 23, 2021
Our broken hearts announce the sudden passing of Susan Cox, also know as Little Mommy, Nana Banana, Susie, Susie Q and Foxy. Born, raised and grown old in Orillia, Susan was a little person with an enormous capacity to bring joy to everyone she met. Both intelligent and funny, she loved to debate, discuss, joke and laugh.
To her family and friends, Susan was that confidante to whom anyone could talk. Always willing to listen, Susan leaned in to our stories absorbing every detail and asking all the right questions. And what a memory – she never neglected to follow up on our ups and downs.
As a legal secretary from 1968 to 2013, Susan played the role of mother hen and role model to countless peers many of whom became her trusted friends. Working in estates, she offered endless patience and empathy to her clients. Known for her kind and generous nature, Susan dedicated much of her time to helping others until her final days.
Susan spent much of her life residing in the Atherley home purchased by her parents Jack and Babe Townson in 1957. Although, she loved to venture off to the city for the occasional show or to travel, especially to BC to see her daughter and grand kids, Susan relished her simple life by the lake. When she wasn’t on the porch or in the kitchen visiting a neighbour, friend or family member who passed by, she was watching the lake, the swans, the geese, the ducks and of course the bloody squirrels. She also made time for many phone calls a day and to keep up on the news – CNN has lost a dedicated viewer!
To her children and grandchildren, Susan was quite simply always there. She loved us her whole heart and soul and despite the distance between us, she nurtured those bonds until her final day.
Susan was the beloved mother of Paul Vanscoy (Taygan) and Kelly Quesnel (Larry). She will be greatly missed by her adored grand children Jake Dunn, Shawna Dunn, Sarah Vanscoy, Colby Quesnel (step grandson) and Crystal Hudyma (granddaughter acquired along the way) and her great grandchildren Ryder and Gage Hudyma-Smith. Susan was predeceased by her brother Peter. She was a great friend to her sister-in-law Barbara-Ann Townson and first cousins Bev Eyers (predeceased) and Pat Berner. The family would like to thank Susan’s neighbours and good friends, Doug and Levada Thurlbeck whose help the past few years allowed her to stay in her house.
Due to COVID restrictions, the family is planning a Zoom Celebration for Susan’s family and close friends in the near future. A larger outdoor Celebration of Life will be held later in the year for the many people who wish to gather in her memory. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in her memory.
Mom, Nana, cousin, aunt and friend, you were a huge force in our lives and your loss leaves such a hole. In your words, we will find a way to rise above our pain and soldier on, holding our memories of you close in our hearts. With God you now go.
