Crawford, Helen Winnifred 1921 – 2021
Just five months after celebrating her 100th birthday, we are sorrowful to announce that Helen Crawford passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 16, 2021 in St. Catharines, Ontario. She was alert and happy up to her final days and was always thankful for her long and happy life. She was recognized with certificates of congratulations by Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Helen is survived by her daughter Patricia Crawford of Toronto, her son Michael Crawford of St. Catharines and her grandchildren William of Ottawa, Samantha of Edinburgh, Scotland and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband John Andrew Crawford in 1976, her parents Leslie and Winnifred (West) Merritt and her brother William Merritt.
Previously a member of Fonthill United Church, Helen transferred her membership to Mountainview United Church in St. Catharines, becoming a long time cherished member who always participated in church events with much joy.
Helen volunteered for 25 plus years at the St. Catharines General Hospital where she delighted in helping out wherever she could and visiting patients. She also volunteered at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital for a number of years answering phones for people calling on the crisis help line with her comforting and encouraging words for those in distress.
We are so thankful to the staff for their caring and compassion at Linhaven Home where Mom spent her last six months and loved everyone and everything they did for her. We are also thankful to the staff at Carepartners Niagara for their caring services which helped Mom to live safely in her own home until April of this year.
The funeral service to honour Helen’s life will take place at Fonthill United Church, 42 Church Hill, Fonthill on Thursday, December 23rd beginning at 11:30 am. Interment will follow at Fonthill Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church 1 hour prior to the service. Those that wish to attend please call the funeral home at 905-892-5762 to reserve a seat. Masks are required to be worn.
