Paul Roy Peltomaki Thursday December 9th 2021

It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of Paul Peltomaki on December 9th, 2021. Paul died at his home in Sudbury Ontario. Paul was 58 years old and had struggled with mental health issues for many years. This was complicated by a brain aneurysm 7 years ago that left him with brain damage. Although Paul had a very difficult journey through life, he also had some very joyous times and nearly 20 years was married and helped raise two stepsons who meant the world to him. He had a career in healthcare as a personal support worker until his health crisis changed all of that. Paul never stopped trying even against the greatest odds and often with no tools. In recent weeks he had started a new chapter following a lengthy hospital admission and was looking forward to better things ahead with the support of family and friends. He will be forever missed and thought of by those who knew and loved him and could see beyond the troubled side of him. He is survived by his parents, Alice and Harold Peltomaki of Parksville, Vancouver Island and his older sister Tammi Parsons of Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island. He also leaves behind two much loved stepsons… Jesse Rovinelli (partner Amanda Barnett) and granddaughter Amelia. And stepson Vince Rovinelli, (wife Jasmine) and grandchildren Jayson, Amy, Dominic and Dawson and Micheal Pelland. Paul was married to Joanne McWatters for nearly 20 years and they raised Jesse and Vince together. Paul will be sorely missed by special friend Carolin Ruisimaki with whom he shared a special bond. Paul’s beloved cat Jackson is safe with Carolin now. Paul is also survived by his niece, Laura Parsons and nephews James Parsons (partner Heather Bowden) and Rikki Chamberland, all of Sudbury. Our thanks to Sabrina Tremblay for taking care of Jackson while Paul was hospitalized. Paul had a special soft spot for his Aunt Kay (Katherine Paul) of Elliot Lake… And for cousins, Scott and Doug Paul with whom many fond summers were spent growing up and beyond. His west coast family included Uncle Jack and Aunt Phyllis Roy of Qualicum Beach and cousin Tom Roy of Nelson BC (wife Sheila and children Haeleigh and Trynn Roy). Cousin Sheilah Roy (predeceased in 2019) and Dayne Roy (partner Kaylie Randle). Paul’s Uncle Ollie (Oliver Peltomaki) always checked up on him and understood his struggle. Mental Health and Addiction can tear families apart and we simply do not have the support available to those who struggle with it. People with Acquired Brain Injury are often sidelined by the demands of daily life.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Health Sciences North during Paul’s recent admission and the kindness they showed to him. It is the system that is broken, not the people working in it. Our gratitude is also extended to the Sudbury Regional Police and the RCMP, Parksville detachment who brought us this news in the gentlest way possible and have been pillars of support as we navigate the loss of Paul. There will be a private cremation service at Lougheed’s in Sudbury Ontario and Paul’s ashes will then journey to his family on Vancouver Island. “Goodbyes hurt the most when the story wasn’t finished.” Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Homes.
