Obituary
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Melvin Eugene Mofford, on December 14, 2021, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 10, 1937, to the late Athol and Glodine (Oulton) Mofford.
Mel graduated from Simonds Regional High School and became a carpenter by trade. Throughout his life, he was the owner operator of many businesses throughout Saint John. Devoted to his faith, Mel was a proud member of St. Mary & St. Bartholomew’s Church and was a part of the church choir.
Very active in his community, Mel was a member of Hibernia #3 Order of Masonic Lodge and was master for 2 terms. He also served as a member of Shriners and played trumpet in the Shriners Band. Mel was a member of Men of Fundy Barbershop Chorus for 38+ years and was a member of Seaside Lawn Bowling Club and served as the first president of the New Brunswick Lawn Bowling Association.
In addition, Mel was a member of the Clearwater Lawn Bowling Club in Florida, participated in the Canada Games in Vancouver and supervised the construction of three lawn bowling greens in New Brunswick.
Mel always looked forward to spending time with Vangie during their trips to Florida each year.
Mel is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Vangie, daughter Shelley (Mark) Chase and his cherished grandson Ben. He is also remembered by his sisters Lorraine Rogers and Lynneth (Fred) Maker.
In addition to his parents, Mel is predeceased by his brothers in-law David Rogers and Raymond Bradshaw.
Visitation will be held between the hours of 10:00am-2:30pm on Friday, December 17th at St. Mary and St. Bartholomew’s Church, (545 Westmorland Road). Funeral Service will take place at 3:00pm at the church. Interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens in the spring.
