Obituary
McCartney, Mervyn (Merv)
Retired – Stelco
With profound sadness the family announces the passing of our dear father on December 1, 2021 following a lengthy illness. The ravages of Alzheimer’s were not kind to him, particularly in the past few years, but he maintained his renowned sense of humour to the very end. Dad passed away peacefully at the age of 86 and would be content with us saying that he’s not so much gone, as simply ‘Gone Fishing’.
Left to mourn his loss are his children Dave (Joanne), Doug, Dan (Heather), Helen (Don) and Stephen. Pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 42 years, Marie. He was quite proud of his legacy with 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren to brag about and he did that often!
Also mourning his passing is his devoted partner of the past 24 years, Lynn Gladstone, her children Andrew (Robyn), Laura (Bill) and the entire Gladstone family. Dad felt accepted and was comfortable around them from the start and we know they are feeling his loss as much as we all are.
Dad was pre-deceased by his parents Russell and Alma McCartney of Carlisle, brother Lee (Vera), sisters Vera (Bill) and Lenore (Lawrence).
Dad was an avid fisherman and spent as much time as he could beside or on the water and devoted countless hours sharing this passion with his children. Ice-fishing on Lake Simcoe, rainbow trout fishing at Owen Sound, dip netting for smelt under the Skyway Bridge in Hamilton, the trip to fabled McKay Lake near Longlac and so many other outings were the foundation of our childhood and among our fondest memories of him. He particularly enjoyed the spring canoe trip into the wilds of Algonquin Park with son Dave in pursuit of speckled trout, although the miles of paddling and portaging to get to the good fishing were perhaps not enjoyed as much. Above all else was trolling for salmon on Lake Ontario in his beloved boat ‘McTurtle’, enjoying a beautiful day on the water with family and friends.
Dad was an enthusiastic motorcyclist, touring most of Canada and the entire lower 48 states in the USA over a series of trips on one of his Honda Gold Wings. He loved baseball in general and his Toronto Blue Jays in particular. In his younger days he was an ace fastball pitcher, dealing strikes with his slingshot underarm pitch and was sought out by many teams in and around the Hamilton area.
Dad worked at Stelco for 32 years, mainly doing cold roll grinding and operating the big overhead cranes that moved the large rolls of steel around the mill. The shift-work was tough on him, but he did what he needed to do to provide for his family. Prior to Stelco he apprenticed as a carpenter and worked mainly for Abbotsford Homes in the Hamilton area. These skills were put to good use from time to time over the years as he helped family, friends and neighbours with various building projects.
In retirement he devoted many hours of volunteer service to the Flamborough Food Bank, enjoyed singing bass with the choir at the Carlisle United Church, travelled and, not surprisingly, went fishing. A lot of fishing!
A special thank-you to the staff and management team at The Meadows Long Term Care Home in Ancaster, as well as Dr. Douglas who oversaw his care there and provided valuable assistance in his last months. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Dad to the Carlisle United Church or the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated.
