John Humphries Tuesday November 23 2021

John Walter Humphries passed away peacefully on November 23, 2021, at the age of 76. Much treasured by his family, he is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Josie; his loving daughters, Elizabeth (Hugh) and Caroline (Tim); and his grandchildren, Declan, Niamh, Malcolm and Julian. Son of the late Walter and Loretta Humphries, John was born in Lindsay on June 22, 1945, and grew up there with his late stepmother Helen Humphries and his sister Susan (John), with whom he always remained close.
Unfailingly generous, gentle and kind, John developed an interest in antiques early in life and began hunting down and restoring treasures from the past even as a child. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in theology from the University of Windsor and attending teachers college in Peterborough, he taught elementary school in Sarnia (where he met Josie, the love of his life) and Downeyville. After 13 years, John decided to pursue his passion full-time and founded J W Humphries Antiques, a business that restored and sold fine examples of 19th century English and Canadian antiques.
For years, John made annual buying trips to England to source many of his wares. As well as running a shop in Lindsay, he was a fixture at top-level antiques shows across Ontario. Exceptionally friendly, outgoing and funny, it was not uncommon to find him sharing his encyclopedic knowledge of history and literature with friends, customers and colleagues, often regaling them with stories for hours. His interest in reviving historic designs extended to buildings as well, as John restored numerous properties in Lindsay, including his own 19th century house, which was published in magazines.
An active member of the community, John was a member of the choir and conservation committee at St. Mary’s Church, and volunteered his time to consult on architectural preservation and mount exhibitions at Kawartha Art Gallery. He also relished visiting historic buildings, museums and galleries across Canada and the United States, as well as in England, France and Italy.
John’s family will forever be grateful for all the love and outstanding care he received from the staff at Extendicare Kawartha Lakes (Balsam).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada or Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Donations and condolences may be made at Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay, or online at www.mackeys.ca.
A mass will be held on Saturday November 27, 2021 at 1:00 pm at St Mary’s Church, 40 Russell Street East, Lindsay. A gathering to celebrate John’s life will take place at a later date. Please note: full vaccination is required to attend. Proof of vaccination will be checked and masks must be worn.
