Joseph Barry “Ponchie” Plain began his journey to the Spirit World on November 19, 2021. Ponchie was born to Aylmer and Emma Plain on February 28, 1950, in Sarnia, Ontario.
Loving father to Animikeence (Teresa). Proud Papa to Adalia (Parker), Marcellus and Meira. Beloved brother to Wilson “Willie”, Annabelle, and Diana “Dizee”. Predeceased by siblings Susanna “Suze”, Burton, Wilfred “Joe”, Dorothy “Dutchie”, Gerald “Shuggie Otis”, and Marie “Mur”. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews, including special niece Gina George.
Ponchie was a very proud Anishinaabe nini and loved his language and culture. He was a champion powwow dancer, arena director, head judge and emcee. Ponchie will be fondly remembered for his humour and always had a joke for many. He was also known to be an educator and mentor for many Anishinaabe youth, and always shared kind words of encouragement to those who looked for guidance. Ponchie will be dearly missed by his many adopted brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews from the powwow trail and many others from across Turtle Island.
Ponchie was an avid bingo player and self-proclaimed “Karaoke King”. Storytelling was one of his favourite things to do, and he did so with such charisma and charm. This was only one of the reasons he was loved and will be missed by so many.
Family and friends will be received at Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre, 1972 Virgil Ave, Sarnia, on Monday, November 22, 2021 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., and Tuesday, November 23, 2021 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow in Aamjiwnaang Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
