Born October 19, 1922, in Taughblane N. Ireland, Isabella joined the Royal Navy of England at the age of 16. She went on to serve until the end of WWll. During this time, she met her future husband Sydney Berry at a Salvation Army mixer. After several years of courtship, at the end of the war, they married at St Matthews Church in England in October 1945.
After the war, like many other brides, Isabella set sail from England and arrived in Canada in August 1946. Isabella and Sydney lived for several years in the Lachute, Quebec area. As the wife of a diesel mechanic, Isabella travelled across Canada with her husband, as he worked on the construction of the Trans Canada Highway and later the St. Lawrence Seaway. After falling in love with the area, they eventually settled in Welland.
Isabella worked for many years at Sunset Haven in Welland, Welland County General Hospital, Fort Erie Hospital, The Salvation Army Eventide Home in Niagara Falls, Napanee Hospital, and for Versa Foods at the Salvation Army College for Officer Training in Toronto, Ontario. She eventually retired at the age of 75. An outstanding cook and baker, Isabella will be remembered by all for her wonderful apple pies, shortbread cookies, and scones to name a few.
Isabella’s smiling face and tender heart will forever be remembered. Her gracious hospitality, love, and affection she shared with her friends and family will be sadly missed. A special thank you to Tammy and Ella for their many hours of care and companionship and to Heather (Neil) LeRoy for many years of friendship.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Isabella Berry October 19 1922
