Obituary
Shirley Steeves of Saint John (Chateau de Champlain), formerly of Moncton (Peoples Park Tower) and long-time resident of Riverview, passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on November 10, 2021. Born on March 2, 1934, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Clinton and Marion (Reeder) Russell.
Shirley is survived by her son Brian Russell Steeves (Darren McLeod) of Saint John, sister Hazel Pike of Fredericton, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Richard Steeves, and infant daughter Susan Elizabeth Steeves.
Shirley was pleased to be closer to her son and son-in-law in Saint John the past two years. She was also very appreciative of the kindness of her second cousin, Jocelyn Hennessy, who frequently looked in on her while she lived at Chateau de Champlain in Saint John. Shirley always loved the company of her close family and friends. For several years, she and her husband Richard looked forward to square and round dancing at several Moncton area clubs and socializing with fellow dancers. Shirley always held a special spot in her heart for her hometown, the Village of Salisbury, and surrounding areas. She often enjoyed reminiscing about the old times and storytelling that were part of the family folklore.
Growing up on a farm, Shirley never lost her love for the land. She very much enjoyed a long drive through the countryside, and cultivating beautiful flower and vegetable gardens along with her husband at their home in Riverview. She always maintained a love for animals, with a special spot in her heart for a long-lived pet beagle. A lover of creative pursuits, she enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, and continued to knit and craft throughout her life. She very much enjoyed her travels to Europe, soaking up the scenery, history and culture of each place she visited. She was a big fan of numerous British television series, getting much joy from the comedies, dramas and mysteries she watched, often several times over.
Respecting Shirley’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB E2J 2E7 (506-646-2424).
