Gregory John McIntosh
November 4, 1952-November 1, 2021
Greg, loving husband of Karen Gregor, played his last gig at home on November 1, 2021. Greg was born in Atikokan, ON and grew up loving the outdoors in the Quetico area, and playing music. A highlight of his teenage years was seeing Jimi Hendrix in Toronto. He worked as an ambulance attendant, truck driver, and heavy equipment instructor before landing his dream job at Ontario Power Generation, retiring as a Thermal Operating Site Supervisor in 2015. He had the respect and friendship of those he worked for and as one of his friends and colleagues told me, “everyone wanted to be on his crew”.
Greg was a consummate musician; he played bass/stand up bass, acoustic guitar, and piano (not so consummate on the ukuele!). He “heard” music in a way that enabled him to create, mix, engineer and share various styles of music including the blues, traditional, folk,Latin, contemporary, and flamenco. As one of his musical family noted, Greg played in many bands in Atikokan, Thunder Bay and Yarmouth. In Thunder Bay, he played in The Chain (Peter, Chrissy, Rob), Flamenco Caravan (Tony, Susanna, Estaban, Matt) and Brother John (Dave, Ted and John) (to name a few) and most recently in Yarmouth with River’s Edge (Larry, Lisa and Paul) and Connie Saulnier. He worked on the recent Hourglass CD (Phil, Clark, Andy, Shannon), playing bass at their release concert. Greg was also very happy to be involved with the ’80’s Band (Monica, Ginette, Wade, Larry, Andre and Jaime); he loved his hot pink T-shirt! According to the many tributes received since news of his passing, Greg was a positive force in all his musical endeavours.
Greg is survived by his wife Karen, mother Joan McIntosh, sister Cathe McIntosh, nieces Ashley Hoszowski-Denty (Shawn), and their children, and niece Amber Hoszowski. He is survived by his daughters Robi and Kalie, and their families.
He is also survived by Kate (Kitty) Gregor, Susan Abbott (Gary), Danny Gregor (Debbie), Robert Gregor (Ann) and many Gregor and Paterson aunts, uncle, nieces and nephews.
Greg was predeceased by his father Cliff McIntosh and dear friend Jim Differ.
