Obituary For Susan Klassen
Susan Klassen (nee Wiebe), resident of Grande Prairie, AB, entered into this world on April 15, 1931, and passed away peacefully on Monday, September 20, 2021, at the age of 90 years.
Susan was born to Abraham and Katharina Wiebe and raised in Blumenthal, SK, on a small farm. As a teenager, after the passing of her father, the family moved to Hague, SK, where she later met her husband, Jacob Klassen. They married and lived in Saskatoon, SK, until the summer of 1969, when they moved to Grande Prairie and raised their four children: Sherry, Greg, Laurie and Norma. They held janitorial contracts for many buildings in the city until she went back to her love of cooking.
Susan cooked at the Wayfare café for many years, the GP Motor Inn and Husky House until she retired. She was most proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom enjoyed her music, she used to play guitar and picked away at other instruments, always had music playing and enjoyed singing in the choir at Wildrose Manor. She enjoyed many hours of puzzling and playing cards. We always heard if she had won and it was a good game of cards or if she was not to pleased of the poor cards she was dealt.
She loved being involved in all our lives and was always willing to help as we were her world. She didn’t travel a lot but one of her first big trips was to Laurie’s wedding in Antigua.
Susan loved caring for her grandchildren and was still strong enough to take care of her great-grandchildren regularly. As the great-granddaughters got older, we started to joke that we weren’t sure who was taking care of who, mom or the girls, as they would have so much fun together, they would lose track of time and responsibilities. Tory and Sydney will always treasure the time they spent with their Gram K.
She loved cooking and helping with family dinners. Susan was known for her buns, cookies or butter tarts and many yummy German recipes! She was also quick to offer a meal and some fresh homemade buns if you were to drop in for a visit.
Susan will be dearly missed by her family; daughters:
Sherry (Wayne) Drysdale, Laurie (Dean) Hutchinson and Norma (Dave) Chalmers;
son Greg (Denise Klassen), Greg passed away 30 days after his Mom’s passing; grandchildren: Jodie (Don) Johnson, Dalin and Justin Klassen, Evan (Sara-Jane) and Jenna and Cameron Chalmers; great-grandchildren: Tory and Sydney Johnson and Weston Chalmers
As well as her extended Drysdale family as part of the grandma group, forever known as Grandma K
Susan was predeceased by her grandson Troy Drysdale; late husband Jacob Klassen; parents Abe and Katharina; siblings Abe and Helen Wiebe, Peter and Christel Wiebe, Anne and Abe Berg and George and Susan Wiebe.
