Obituary
Peacefully, on Friday, October 22nd, at Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie, MB, Lucien Maurice Joseph Duchesne passed away with his family at his side.
He is predeceased by his wife Georgiana (nee Hayek) Duchesne; parents George and Denise (nee Robert) Duchesne, niece Shirley, great nephew G-Remi and his father in-law George Hayek.
He is survived by his son Blaze (Yvonne) of Winnipeg, step-sons Russell (Gaelene) of Wetaskiwin AB and Darrell of Winnipeg; his siblings Laurette (Richard), Roger (Colette), and Rene (Brenda); mother in-law Mary; great niece Alexandra, granddaughter Desiree and great-granddaughter Arla.
Maurice, as he liked to be called, but was also known to many others as “Morris” or “Moe”, was born in Makwa, Saskatchewan and moved to Manitoba as a young man. There he worked for Dr. Isman grooming and caring for race horses. He would travel across Canada taking the horses to various harness racing events. Maurice always maintained a love of horses and often spoke fondly of his time working with them. He eventually moved to Portage la Prairie and settled outside of Portage in Edwin, MB, where he lived most of his life. He worked at several different jobs in the Portage area mainly for some of the local farmers before earning his 5th class power engineering ticket and working for the Portage la Prairie School Division as a night charge custodian for several different schools, before retiring in 2009.
Maurice loved curling and did so throughout a large portion of his life. He was also an avid fan of CFL football and would watch as often as he could. In his spare time, Maurice also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird watching and playing cards.
Maurice’s smile would light up a room. He knew many people in the Portage area and there was rarely a time where he wouldn’t bump into someone he knew or worked with while out and about. Maurice’s humor and kindness will be sorely missed by both family and friends alike.
In accordance with Maurice’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Following cremation, there will be a private family interment. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Maurice’s name to Diabetes Canada.
