It is with great sadness the family of Philip Sturges announce his passing on January 15, 2021 at the age of 92 years.
He will be dearly missed by his spouse of 64 years, Pat; children: Helen, Heather (John), Ian (Lorna), Norman (Stephanie); grandchildren: Lisa, Laurel, Hayley, Julia (Keith), Lesley, Erica (Kevin), Tara, Aileen, Adam; and great grandchildren: Emma and Alice.
Phil was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Ellen; brother, Ron; and grandson, Colin.
Phil immigrated to Canada from England in 1949, working in many different capacities – farm hand at his aunt and uncle’s farm in Paradise Valley, AB; travelling photographer alongside his future brother-in-law; and other positions, until he joined Woodward’s Stores in Vancouver, B.C., later moving with the company to Alberta. At Woodward’s, Phil worked in hardgoods, merchandising, and ultimately, for many years, as a store manager (Westmount and Northgate) until retiring in the early 80s after 30+ years of service. He was a great mentor to both staff and management at Woodward’s and a friend to all.
Phil was also actively involved with Scouts Canada, the St. Albert Trekkers Volkssport Club, the St. Albert Food Bank and the St. Albert Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer Association. His strong love of music saw him playing trumpet in the Cosmopolitan Band and singing with both the St. David’s Welsh Male Voice Choir and St. Albert United Church Choir. He was fond of his weekly coffee klatches with friends, and loved the many events, celebrations, gatherings of his family. Phil was known to repeatedly remark: “moving to Canada was one of the best things I ever did.”
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Phil’s name to a charity of one’s choice.
