Beloved father and grandfather, lifelong Ottawa native and former business owner, Jacques Proulx, passed away peacefully on the evening of October 14, 2021 in palliative care at Carlingview Manor long term care home.
Jacques is predeceased by his father Hervé, mother Aurore, brothers Jean-Claude, André, and Denis and sister Colette. He leaves behind his sons Tyson (Sarah) and Mason (Kristin), his daughter Ashley and grandchildren Jade, Aunyx, Rowan and Marigold. Jacques is also survived by his brothers Gilles, Michel, Guy, François and Serge, his sister Huguette and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born on February 1, 1946 to Hervé Proulx and Aurore (née Meilleur), Jacques was the middle child of 11 children, based around a largely francophone Loretta Avenue in Ottawa’s Little Italy neighbourhood.
Jacques was longtime owner of les frères Proulx Brothers Inc., an innovative professional photographic and digital imaging lab. The company was officially founded in 1970, as Jacques and his brothers (André, Michel, François and François Lafrenière) went into business. In 1980, Jacques became the sole owner and two years later the company was federally incorporated. Proulx Brothers Inc. continued to faithfully serve the National Capital Region, even expanding into worldwide operations until its closure in 2010.
A gregarious and social man, Jacques greatly enjoyed the camaraderie of business associates and was unconditionally proud of his family. As a largely self-taught professional, he had a fascination with history, philosophy, science, emerging technologies and any other obscure topic that captured his interest. In social situations, he was known to interject with “savais-tu que…” (did you know that…) when wanting to share what he had learned.
Late in life, Jacques struggled with mental illness, specifically with schizophrenia and dementia. On his behalf, the family wishes to express our gratitude to the care staff at the various residences that cared for him over the years, including the staff of the Royal Ottawa, West End Villa, and Carlingview Manor.
