Stanley William Fenner MacLean Sunday October 17th 2021

It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my dear husband Stan after a lengthy illness at the age of 89. He adored his five grandchildren and spouses, and three beautiful great grandchildren. Father to Stacey and Debbie, and beloved brother to sister Gwen. He was predeceased by sisters Jean, Elizabeth, Audrey, Esther, Gerry, Shirley and brothers Charlie and Robert. He was the beloved Uncle Stan to many nieces an nephews and will also be fondly remembered by his adopted family of the Neil and Annabel MacLean clan near London, Ontario. He will be sorely missed by Wayne and Marlene, Katherine, Bonnie and more. He will also be missed by son-in-laws Paul, Gary and his wife Dorothy.
Stan was President of The Fenner Foundation, whose mandate was to honour the over 100,000 Home Children who came to Canada from England…between 1867 and 1930..his Mother was a Barnardo Home Girl. Through the Foundation, Stan was able to have Colonel Sam Strickland inducted into the Peterborough Pathway Hall of Fame and also he had a plaque erected in honour of Sam at Nicholl’s Oval Park.
Again through the Foundation and in coordination with Professor Elwood Jones of Trent Valley Archives, he contributed to the publication of two books, entitled “Lakefield’s Christ Church Cemetery 1853-1886” and “Stan Andrew’s Century” as remembered by a Home Child who loved Canada.
Stan was a member of the Lakefield Legion and will be remembered by many for driving his Willy’s Army Jeep proudly escorting Veterans for the July 1st, Rememberance Day and Christmas Parades. He enjoyed his time as a Beaver Leader with the Boy Scouts of Canada and having the kids over to camp on a weekend at our forest property. He loved and played baseball as a teen and played on the Senior’s Slo Pitch League in Peterborough for many years till he slowed down…he was sad to give that up. Stan was a Bell Canada retiree, worked as a Microwave Technician and helped install the first Microwave Station in Peterborough. He was also an active member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church and he loved his Church family..his faith meant a lot to him..
Stan’s talents were numerous..he could build houses and had built his own log home…he ran a sawmill after he retired..he had at one time his Pilot’s license and dreamed of owning his own plane..he was musical..played the trumpet in a band as a young man…he was quite the orator..never shied away from public speaking or speaking his mind…He was very proud of his work restoring an old Model T and Durant truck. He was an Inventor of sorts..when he worked on a project and couldn’t find the right tool he would make his own as he had taught himself to weld. He enjoyed working on our property using a restored tractor or his beloved Excavator.
Stan loved to help his neighbours…was a humble and generous man…he treasured many people in his life, such as Ron and Prim Lowry, neighbour Karl White and too many others to mention but who he counted as a friend.
At this time I would like to thank the wonderful Nurses & others who cared for Stan at home and at the Hospital and who were kind enough to listen to all his stories and jokes… with patience. I also want to give a special thanks to our family Doctor Maltman for his home visits and care.
Stan was a proud Canadian and extremely proud to be a descendant of a “Home Child”.
At his request there will be no Service but a graveside Service at a later date.
In honour of his memory, donations to St. Luke’s or as he loved animals and his pets..to LAWS would be appreciated.
