It is with heavy hearts and sadness that the family of Rev. William (Bill) Sherwin announces his passing at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Orillia, on Sunday, October 10, 2021, in his 95th year.
Bill is predeceased by his wife, Edna Lois Sherwin (nee Mitchell) and their son, Robert (Bob) William Sherwin of Stoney Creek.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Ruth Louise Schneider (nee Sherwin) and husband Wolf of Calgary and son, John Mitchell Sherwin and wife Kelly (nee Keith) of Welland, his 8 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren, and by his brother Donald Sherwin (Chris) of Ottawa and nieces Nancy Sherwin of Port Dover and Wendy Owens (John) of Ottawa. Bill was also deeply loved by his daughters-in-law Dawn Sherwin and Debbie Sherwin (Terry).
Bill was born in Guelph, Ontario before moving to St. Catharines, where he graduated from St. Catharines Collegiate. He then attended University of Toronto, where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master’s Degree in Theology. He later received a Master’s Degree in Divinity.
Bill became a United Church minister and served in Espanola, Massey, Matheson, Bronte, Guelph, St. Thomas, St. Catharines and Long Branch. Bill and Lois then retired to Orillia to be back on Lake Couchiching, upon which he and his brother grew up each summer at Geneva Park, and to be closer to their beloved family cottage on Eagle Lake in South River.
During his time in Orillia, Bill received the Order of Orillia and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Medical Association for his volunteer work. Other associations he served include: Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, Legion of Honour for 30 years as a Kiwanian, including Past President, President and Secretary of Kiwanis International, involvement with the Kiwanis Music Festival, Champlain Seniors Service Club, Orillia Literacy Council, Canadian Cancer Society, Boy Scouts, and VON Canada. Bill and Lois also sang in Jubilee Chorale. Bill was a member of St. George’s Minister’s Curling Club, Secretary for multiple presbyteries of the United Church of Canada and a Pastoral Visitor and Chaplain at Spencer House in Orillia. Bill was also a member of the Eagle Lake Conservation Association.
Friends’ visitation will take place on Tuesday Oct. 26th 11:00 am-1:00 pm at St. Paul’s United Church, 62 Peter Street North, Orillia followed by a service at 1:00 p.m.

Please note that masks are required at the service and proof of vaccine passports are required to attend the luncheon only following the service.
