The family of Clarence Arthur Fidler is
saddened to announce his death in Antigonish on October 7,
2021.
Born in Winnipegosis, Manitoba, on
September 10, 1946, he was the eldest child of the late Arthur and
Edna (Campbell) Fidler.
As a young man, Clarence proved to be a
talented athlete at hockey arenas, baseball diamonds, curling rinks,
and school gymnasiums. Following graduation from high school, he
joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and graduated on May 19,
1970. This was a significant accomplishment for a young
Métis man. He was posted to Nova Scotia where he served for
28 years at Truro, Parrsboro, Antigonish, Bridgetown, Kingston and
Stellarton detachments.
In 1994, Clarence and his family moved
to St. Andrews, Antigonish County, and in 1998, he retired from
Antigonish Detachment at the rank of Corporal. In retirement, he
enjoyed building golf clubs, volunteering in his community, playing
golf, curling, and coaching junior curling at the provincial and
national levels. His excellence as a coach followed many years of
competitive curling during which he was a member of multiple
provincial championship teams as well as winning the 1984 Canadian
Police Curling Championship. He was awarded an honorary lifetime
membership in the Canadian Police Curling Association and dedicated
many years to promoting police curling in Nova Scotia.
He took great pride in his
children and their accomplishments in hockey, curling, and highland
dancing. He enjoyed playing cribbage, country music, and being in
charge of the TV remote control.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Garry
(MacPherson); his children, Hugh (Tammy), London, Ontario; Keenan
(Devin) Fidler-Ryan, Doha, Qatar; Andrew (Laura), Newcastle, Ontario;
his dear grandchildren, Kaelen, Eliot, and Sadie Jean Fidler-Ryan, and
Grady and Zachary Fidler.
He is also sadly missed by his sisters,
Darlene (Jim) Assailly, Dauphin, Manitoba; Geraldine, Nanaimo, BC, and
brothers, Garold (Karen), Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba; Greg, Thompson,
Manitoba; Dallas (Mona), Edmonton, Alberta; his sister-in-law, Ellen
MacIntyre and godchild, Ciorsti MacIntyre, both of Halifax; as well as
aunts, nieces, and nephews in Western Canada.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased
by his grandparents, Sandy and Rosalie Campbell and Joseph and
Margaret Fidler; sister, Brenda; and brothers Nelson, Eddie, Doug,
Ralph, and Melvin; his father-in-law, Judge Hugh J. MacPherson and
mother-in-law Jean C. MacPherson QC.
During his life, Clarence was fortunate
to enjoy the friendship of many fellow neighbours, police officers,
curlers, golfers, and community members. This is appreciated by his
family as we support each other during these difficult
days.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral
Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Sunday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 pm
with a private family service on Monday at 11:00 am. The
