Vaughan Thornton (nee Cooper) was a force to all who knew and loved her. Alternately known through the years as V-Tail, V, Wantie, Auntie Storm, Mama V and Mrs. T., she built lasting relationships with family and friends of all ages around the world.
Vaughan’s looks and somewhat regal bearing belied her true down-to-earth nature. She was more comfortable at her Lasqueti cabin or snorkeling off Bermuda than attending events – but boy, could she ever glam it up with the best of them.
Passionate and persistent in every endeavor she put her heart to (art, teaching, golf, bridge, various causes) some might say she could even be feisty in her determination to defend the things that were important to her, right a wrong or to make a point.
Our V was a model for putting herself out there and taking the road that was often different regardless of what others thought. Always learning and stretching out of her comfort zone, Vaughan was interested in all the whys and hows of the world around her. Often ahead of her time, she challenged the status quo and raised issues around patriarchy and ism towards women in person and creatively through her art. Her collection of works by women on paper was proudly presented throughout her home.
A loved and loving partner to Nick for 61 years, mum to Alexa (Adena) and Peter (Louise) she was most specially devoted to her granddaughters Chella and Sophie. Her extended family in Bermuda and Montreal, including her sister Molly and brother Alex (Sheelagh), in-laws Sally and Dan and all her nieces and nephews, will miss her presence and influence.
Over the last number of years Vaughan was a model of grace and acceptance with circumstances beyond her control. We will be forever grateful to our loving caregivers, led by Mina McEvoy, who took such good care of her.
Without a doubt, Vaughan was an inspiration. The world has lost a genuinely unique and special woman. Her presence and love will be long remembered.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation and/or Artists for Kids. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
