Dr. Peter Stanley Schmalz of Walkerton passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Friday, October 1, 2021. Peter’s greatest joy was his family, and he was very proud of his children, James, Michael (Tonya Poirier), Lisa, and grandchildren Jackson, Walker, Jacob, Rachel, Scarlett Shore, and Jenson Shore. He is also survived by his wife, Bev MacDonald, and her children Kriss (Jodi) Snell, Craig (Katie Vanderhaar) Snell, Nikki (William) Culbert, and her grandchildren Masyn, Jordyn, Hailey, Alison, Ava, Axl, Enid, and Kent. He will be missed by his twin brother Paul (Myrna) Schmalz, brothers-in-law Brian (Karen) MacDonald, Barry (Cindy) MacDonald, Scott (Kathy) MacDonald, and sisters-in-law Lynn (Darryl) Chalmers, Lisa (Kurt) Whitfield, and several nieces and nephews.
Peter was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley Hide, mother and stepfather Mary and Paul Matiussi, his older brother James Schmalz Bickers, and brother-in-law Peter Hide.
Peter’s passion was for history and teaching. His teaching career started at John F Ross Collegiate in Guelph, and he came to Walkerton District Secondary School in 1967 as head of the History Department and remained there until his retirement.
During his teaching career he obtained his master’s degree and PhD in History from the University of Waterloo. He had a keen interest in our indigenous people and received the Joseph Brant Award in 1992 for his book “History of the Saugeen Indians” from the Ontario Historical Society and the Sir John A MacDonald honourable mention in 1991 for his book “The Ojibwa of Southern Ontario.”

Cremation has taken place and per Peter’s wishes there will be no services. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Walkerton and District Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
