Jacoba Stephana Joling
With sadness we announce the passing of our mother and Oma, Jacoba Joling, on September 26, 2021. Jackie was born on December 26, 1922 in Huissen, the Netherlands. She was the 4th daughter of Herman Janssen and Jacoba Polman. She grew up in a big family and had a happy childhood.
When she was 16, the war started, and 8 months later Germany occupied Holland. There were many hardships during the occupation; and eventually the war came too close and the family had to evacuate. They were gone from their home for 7 months. It was a terrible time, but the whole family survived.
After the war, Jackie met and married John Joling. In 1958, together with their small daughter Wilma, they emigrated to Canada, settling in Selkirk, Manitoba. A year later, their son Henry Herman was born.
When Henry started school, Jackie went to work at the Selkirk Mental Hospital, where she was a nurse’s aide for 17 years. John got a good job at the brand new Betel Home in Selkirk; and they both retired in 1983.
Wilma and Henry both married, and grandchildren arrived. They found happiness in their new homeland. In 2001 they sold their house on Robinson Avenue and moved to the new Kiwanis on the Red in Selkirk. He was brought to Betel Home, where he had worked for so many years and where he died in 2003 at the age of 84.
She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Wilma and Lorne Nicol, Henry and Leslie Ann Joling; grandchildren Kathi and Kevin Long, John Nicol, Elaine Nicol, Monica Joling and Matthew and Hannah Joling; great-grandchildren Michael and Kaleigh Long; Christopher Long, Parker and Nicolas Nicol and Ezekiel Nicol.
And I will raise you up on eagles’ wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of his hand.
