Obituary
Yvette Carol Wesley
A traveler from the onset, our fair lass’s first journey was at the tender age of nine. Leaving Middlesbrough, England, the only home she had ever known, she crossed the deep Atlantic to begin a new life with her immediate family. She said farewell to many beloved, extended family members, telling them to fear not – she would return. Facing a new future in Canada, she fully expected to reside in a home made of ice!
This was not to be, of course, and she quickly settled into her new life in Selkirk, Manitoba. She even took to the ice as a competitive figure skater. Her fiery soul, fierce determination, and loyalty attracted friends quickly; friends to last a lifetime and many new ones to be made along the way. Through her teens, friends affectionately dubbed her ‘Corvette’. This nickname had little to do with her driving record, otherwise ‘Crash’ may have been a more apt tag, but those are stories for another time. In the ’70s, her dazzling smile and permed blonde hair were a familiar sight at The Comp and around town as she whizzed by in her turquoise Chevette, her first mode of transportation for her many travels to come.
Her life’s journeys took her high and low, from creating a new life in Calgary and tackling the slippery slopes of the Rocky Mountains, to ridiculously fun vacations in the Hawaiian tropics. Still, her heart’s home remained at her first Canadian destination. Selkirk was where family and friends resided, and they meant everything to her; they were her home. Selkirk is where she cherished and raised her two sons. It’s where her lifetime career was at Manitoba Hydro. It was her parents’ home and where her brothers and her niece were close at hand. It was where she met the love of her life, Jody!
With her roots firmly planted, she branched out through her many travel destinations. She was married in the Dominican, she took trips back to England, made a family trip to Australia for her son’s wedding, adventured to Cuba, Mexico, Arizona, New York, well you get the idea. And we mustn’t forget the zip-lining experience in Puerta Vallarta with her Mom! Even when at home she loved the many trips to their home away from home – the cabin. She savoured the beauty and tranquility of the lake. Like everywhere she went, new friends were to be made. It was a place to walk her dog, to play Kinsmen Bingo on a Saturday afternoon, to take award-winning photos, and most importantly, a place for family and friends to visit. Her new granddaughter was undoubtedly Nany’s favourite visitor! It was her haven.
Her last journey will be the hardest for her and for all those she has left behind. As with any journey, we bid Yvette a fond farewell and safe travels – till we meet again at the next stop.
Loved and survived by husband Jody, mother Joyce, mother-in-law Evelyn, brothers Mark (Janice) and Kevin (Joanne), son Dylan, son Shayne (Rebekah), granddaughter Halle, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and her beloved golden retriever. Yvette passed away peacefully on September 21st, 2021 surrounded by family, she will be reuniting in heaven with her beloved Dad, David.
