Obituary of Thomas Alexander Grant
Known to many, loved by all. Tom “Tommy” Grant, 69 passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. Tom (middle child of Harold and Jessie, brother to Craig and Shauna) grew up in North Sydney where he spent his formative years playing sports, lifeguarding, sailing, and playing pranks. Known affectionately as “Group”, Tom’s best quality was his willingness to “give you the shirt off his back”. Tom made the decision to leave his beloved Cape Breton to begin a life with the RCMP, a career that fit so well with his giving nature and his thirst for adventure.
Tom took great pride being an RCMP member and worked undercover narcotics all over Canada. Oh, the stories he could tell, and he did! While stationed in Manitoba, Tom met the love of his life, Judy. Soon inseparable, Tom and Judy married in Ontario and began an amazing journey together. Their family quickly grew to include three daughters. Tom loved “his girls”, Jen (Jamie), Heather (Sean), and Kristy (Devin). The RCMP also allowed for the greatest adventure of their life, moving to the Yukon, where he, Judy, and their girls became a tight-knit family while exploring the great north. After 19 years of living “away”, Tom and his family moved back to Nova Scotia. He served in Yarmouth, Kingston, and in Windsor where he and Judy enjoyed their retirement years.
Tom and Judy were even busier after retirement with the birth of their six adored grandchildren, Arlo, Layla, Felix, Orrin, Connor, and Violet. Family was precious to Tom and the times together and memories made will be treasured forever.
Tom’s greatest gift was making every person he met feel welcomed and loved. He took the time to get to know people, accepted them for who they were, and offered a helping hand when needed. He made a difference in so many people’s lives. He found great happiness in reconnecting with his Cape Breton friends. Tom’s life was made special by the friendships of Greg and Sylvia Dearing, Eddy and Pam Clarke, and many other wonderful friends and family both near and far. Special thanks to Laurie, Carol, Danny, Darryl, Paulette, Dr. Watson, and their amazing neighbours for always being there for Tom and Judy.
In lieu of flowers or donations, Tom wants everyone to hug your grandchildren or loved ones, have someone over for dinner, shovel a driveway, stack someone’s wood, walk your dog, and continue to pay it forward to make the world a better place.
