Haga, Antonie –
It is with deep sadness and great loss that we announce the passing of Antonie Joris Haga (Tony) on August 27, 2021, in his 90th year. Beloved and devoted husband of Theresia Anna Pico (Terry). Proud and wonderful father to Rick (Susan) and Lex. Loving Opa to Jeffrey, Adam, Mattea, Rhiannon and Aiden.
Born in Tjimahi, Java, Indonesia to Henrietta & Joris Haga, Tony returned to his parents native Holland in 1933 where he grew up with his sisters Hannie & Guusje and brother Joris Jr. and then married his sweetheart Terry on July 1st, 1955, at St. Paulus Roman Catholic Church in the Hague, Netherlands. On July 15, 1955, they boarded the s.s. Groote Beer in Rotterdam and set sail for Canada arriving in Halifax at Pier 21 on July 25, 1955. They then started their new life in Canada by making their way by train to Taber, Alberta. As a trained food chemist Tony started his successful professional career in the sugar beet industry in Taber and though the years moved into senior managerial roles in the food processing industry up to his retirement.
Following the birth of their sons Rick & Lex in Alberta, Tony & Terry made their way east to Toronto and then to the West Island of Montreal (Pointe Claire & Dollard des Ormeaux) to raise their family. Tony’s passion and love was his wife and sons that extended to family members in Holland, the United States, Alberta & BC. He developed close friendships with neighbours and colleagues wherever they went that continued throughout his life. Soccer and hockey were his sports passions that he enjoyed playing and watching. Tony & Terry also enjoyed travelling and visited many different destinations. In their retirement they moved to Guelph, Ontario and settled into the wonderful retirement community of Village by the Arboretum. They enjoyed a rich and vibrant retirement life actively involved in the community surrounded by many friends and neighbours.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff at Schlegel Retirement Residences in Guelph for their care & support extended to both Tony and Terry over the past 3 years. We would also like to extend our deepest appreciation and thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Guelph General Hospital for the compassionate care that they provide to Tony over a number of stays in the hospital and in the last few days of his life.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Cremation and interment have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Guelph General Hospital Foundation. The family invites those he knew and loved Tony to celebrate his life and remember him in your own special way and know that he is looking down at us fondly and is at peace in heaven.
