Obituary
Ian Neil McKinnon (January 5, 1946 – August 25, 2021)
Surrounded by his loving family, Ian passed away in the early morning of August 25th after a year-long courageous battle with cancer. Ian was born in Toronto and attended Upper Canada College and Ridley College before finishing high school at Neuchatel Junior College in Switzerland. Ian continued his education at Princeton University, followed by an MBA at Columbia University.
A committed family man, Ian devoted much of his time to raising his three daughters while also building a successful Bay Street career. A creative business mind, Ian had a hand in a number of private ventures. The proudest achievement of these was Timothy’s World Coffee, which he purchased with his wife Becky in 1985. Ian was Chairman of the Board and the driving force behind the strategic direction of the company. His confidence in Becky was unwavering in her role as President. After retiring from the investment business, Ian joined Timothy’s full time in 2000 to guide the company’s high growth wholesale business, which culminated in the sale of the company in 2008.
Ian and Becky enjoyed many years of worldly travel, and they especially cherished their time with family in Muskoka. Ian adored being near the water and family dinners which included more and more people as years went by. He loved his sons in law and truly cherished his relationship with each of them. The family’s ever-growing canine pack always brought a smile to his face with Music being a most treasured companion.
Ian was predeceased by his father Neil John McKinnon, his mother Phyllis Adelaide Matthews, his step father Beverley Matthews, and his nephew Itaco Nardulli. He is survived by Becky, his loving wife of 52 years, daughters Bonnie Flemington (Jeff), Michelle Nickel (Remi), and Laura Bowles (Sam), grandchildren Finley (Léah Marsot-Shiffman), Ainsley and Riley Flemington, Marc, Luke and Jack Nickel, Addie and Erskine Bowles, sister Sheila McKinnon and niece Cariddi McKinnon Nardulli. The family is grateful for the love and support of Dr. Karen Martin, Cierra Heon, and the entire team at Closing the Gap in Huntsville.
There will be a small service for immediate family members only. Donations in Ian’s memory can be made to the Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre.
