Obituary for
Shirley Margaret Mole (Cotton)
MOLE, Shirley Margaret (nee Cotton) (Auntie Gint) November 1925 – January 13, 2021
Sadly on the fourth anniversary of moving into Tufford Nursing Home, Shirley peacefully passed away there at the age of 95 of natural causes.
Shirley was born in New Westminster, British Columbia and after graduating with her nursing degree moved east where she met her husband to be, Wally, settled down in Welland and started a family. She was a well respected registered nurse who spent years helping others while working for pediatricians Drs J M Ennis and S M Rau before moving to the opposite end of the spectrum working at Sunset Haven Nursing Home. Following her retirement in 1990, she volunteered at the Welland Red Cross office.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Wally (2017), her parents, all three of her siblings, and all of her in laws. She is survived by her daughter Wendy Hammond (Jim Chalcraft) of Fonthill, son Randy of Port Coquitlam BC, as well as many nieces and nephews in Welland, BC and Alberta.
On June 18, 1958 Shirley was unanimously awarded the Royal Canadian Humane Association Award for her “heroic action and presence of mind in assisting in the rescue of Heino Deeken, from drowning in Point Holmes, near Comox BC on August 28, 1957.” Shirley loved dogs, reading, traveling, swimming, sewing and knitting. She donated many, many beautiful baby afghans she had lovingly created over the years to needy charities and was well known in Welland for her gorgeous flower gardens at her First Avenue home. Wendy, Randy and Jim would like to sincerely thank all the wonderful nurses and staff at Tufford Nursing Home in St Catharines for the great care and compassion they extended to both our mother and father over the past four years.
As per Shirley’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to Covid restrictions there will be no service. When the time is appropriate Randy will drive some of her ashes back to BC, commemorating an adventure the two of them took close to 50 years ago when Mom drove our great aunt’s car from Vancouver to Welland. Memorial donations may be made to the Welland Humane Society or the Canadian Red Cross Society. Arrangements entrusted to the H. L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland. Online condolences available at www.cudneyfuneralhome.com.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Shirley Margaret
