Peacefully, surrounded by loving family, on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at Marshall Gowland Manor, Patricia Broadhurst passed into eternal rest at the age of 91. Reunited with her dearly beloved husband of 59 years, Dr. Thomas Broadhurst (2013). Loving mother of Carolyn Broadhurst- de Rosenroll (late Stephen), David Broadhurst, Lesley Broadhurst (Harry Teitelbaum), and Jennifer Malcolm. Cherished grandmother of Caitlin (Chris), Roy, Taylor, Diana, Lindsay, and Andrew. Predeceased by her parents Archie and Marie Smith and her sister Marion (Wilkie) Davey.
Pat lived a full and wonderful life – defined by her love of family, friends, and her joy of reading and writing. She was admired by all for her deep kindness and generosity of spirit. Her strength of character and keen determination helped her meet the joys and challenges in life. She was an absolutely wonderful Mother and Grandmother – words cannot express how much we will miss her.
Pat graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English. After years of devoting herself to raising her family, she took great pride in teaching and helping students as an English Professor at Lambton College in Sarnia. She was a talented writer of poetry, and an active member of the Sarnia Writers Group. Pat went on to write her own book, “Brief Passage”, which was published by River City Press. Pat was a pioneer in Special Education. As the past President of the Kingston Learning Disabilities Society, she was a driving force behind its formation and work. Pat was also recognized as a long term supporter of Save the Children Canada. Through this organization, Pat sponsored a South Korean girl from childhood to adulthood who went on to become a nurse in her home country.
We would like to convey our deepest gratitude to Kathy MacLean, her loving caregiver of 9 years. With Kathy’s devoted love and care, Pat was able to stay in her treasured Sarnia home until 2019 when she moved to Marshall Gowland Manor (MGM). Our deepest gratitude also goes to the nurses, PSWs and all the incredible staff at MGM whose love and care were so very evident from the day she moved in. Pat’s final days were peaceful and filled with love because of your devotion.
Cremation has occurred as per Pat’s wishes. Funeral service will be held at Smith Funeral Home (details to be communicated at a later date on their website and in the Sarnia Observer). Memories and condolences may be sent online at www.smithfuneralhome.ca
